A post I did a while back on the "Official Labour Contract", see halfway down the posting there is an item titled Article 120 . These are the conditions under which an employee can be dismissed immediatly - note the conditions attached to the dismissal though! Under certain circumstances t...

depends on how you ship them. if you bring a few odds and ends in your luggage they will probably not bother. if you ship them by post, courier or unaccompanied baggage then they are entitled to ask for 5% (which is the standard import tarriff). keep the invoices with you incase, but i have never ha...

I agree with Capt. Auz 100% - some very sound advice. Additionally, how are you going to be funding this? I assume you have independent means? Dubai is not a cheap place to live and not really the type of place where you want to offer your services for free. There's also a technicality/ legality, if...

You are absolutely right about the legal aspect.. But as far as I know.. "A permanent job" is whats illegal.. the sort of 'free work' / 'internship' or 'work on probation' I'll be doing wont come in that category (kindly correct me if i'm wrong) I am saying this because even the universit...

I agree it sucks if all you want to do is get a little experience. However you need to take the following into consideration. Realistically speaking about 90% of the work force in the country is immigrant/ expatriate labour. This is strictly controlled through a labour contract system for a number o...

:) sorry for soundling like such an "old man", but that wouldn't work either. technically (again), you'd have to apply for a labour card in order to be have a legal probation period - and of course with a student visa this can't happen. it may be easier to look for a permanent job in a fre...

It’s not that I’m not advising you to try; however the local laws are slanted against temporary employment of any kind. You will be hard pressed to find a company who would be prepared to offer you a legal internship of any kind because of the costs associated with this and also the risks the compan...

Thanks Cynical Scot. Can anyone advise whether its good to get paid in Pounds or AED ? In most instances you don't have the luxury of negotiating this; in general companies will pay you in local currency (dirham) into a local bank account - what you do with it after that is up to you. The Dirham is...

Possibly; I didn't say that it was impossible, just that legally it is very difficult for companies to employ people for internships of even holiday jobs. If I was an employer i would have to go through the same process and pay the same amount of money to recruit and register someone as an intern as...

I would suggest that you have your highest secondary school certificate attested. This is normally the minimum education qualification criteria for a "westerner"

The answer is 1:42, but only before next Wednesday, then the regulations will be changed and the answer could then be between 1:51 and 1:67, and only if you have a No Objection Certificate from the neighbour.

Hi there Venith, Under the previous ban system (prior to 2005) the ban was affected depending on your Labour classification (i.e. your seniority). There were a number of labour categories that were exempt from the ban (doctors, engineers, agricultural workers, sports coaches ...), but in conjunction...

Okay, I see what you mean. In the case of the UAE the original passport is required to enter the residency stamp. Normally what they issue to visitors is an electronic generated entry visa; this is bar-coded and scanned into the immigration terminal when you enter - this basically; once you are in t...

Sorry to say it, but Jobs in Dubai site seems to be a con. It has been posted a number of times on the Dubai Forums not to use this site to apply for jobs through. It is illegal under the UAE Labour law to charge employees or prospective employees for recruitment or any of the other associated recru...

Hi there, You will need to get a copy of the specific Free Zone law from the Hamriya Freezone Authority. Each Free Zone seems to have their own version of the Labour Law. Some are quiet comprehensive as in the case of JAFZ, and others have plenty of loopholes and grey areas. In most instances the Fr...

One other quick thing I should point out is that if you terminate, are terminated, or your labour contract is cancelled you can actually be banned (under UAE Labour Law), the ban issues is normally circumvented by a TRANSFER of your labour card to a new employer. CANCELLATION normally results in a b...

An oil trader once told me it apparently has something to do with the sulphur content of the oil, refineries have to be configured to process it, and of course more sulphur = more pollution. Some countries have large reserves, but the wrong “type” of oil – I suppose this is more expense to process.
