Dear friends in Dubai I need and appreciate your advice Jan 19, 2006

My friends,

first of all I appreciate this forums and all of you who try to help the others out!

I am originally Iranian and I am temporarily residing in The Netherlands.

I am a MBA graduate of University of Greenwich in UK and prior to this degree I graduated in 2002 in the filed of Economics from Shahid Beheshti University in Iran. also I have two years and half years experience in the area of sales & markting and business development.

I have decided to follow my career in Dubai and for quite a while I have been trying to approach some vacancies. 'no result' after a while and follwed are my experiences:

1. I tries khallejtimes online 'appointments' but the case is that most of positions there, are advertised by recruitment agancies not directly by the employing company. I also think most employers wont consider the CVs of the applicants who are residing abroad as they want face-to-face interview.(Correct me if im wrong.)

2. I tried several website of recruitment agancies. the one who charge you are absolutely wishfull (like jobsindubai.com) which are just frauds. and also the other companies have posted some vacancies on their site but the case is that also they are willing to deal with applicants who are currenltly residing in Dubai. (correct me if I am wrong)

So I was quite unsuccessful so far but I am planning to come to Dubai in Feb/March to stay for one month and give it a more try. Please advise me
on following issues:

1. how are employers approach toward Iranians (do they have a special preconception about Iranians)

2. While I am there in Dubai, what would be the most appropriate way to approach vacancies? how can I find them?

3. Do you think I will have a chance in Dubai and also do you agree with me that one month is enough for looking for a job?

I wish you all success and I hope I can repay back your help someday somewhere.

Ramin

Hi Ramin,

All the best on your job hunt.

To answer a few of your questions.

1. Yes employers mostly prefer to meet the candidates face to face before hiring them. Its does happen in a few cases that people are offered job before they land here but its a rarity.

2. DO NOT PAY ANY JOB PORTALS!! i guess that lets you know all about it. There are recruitment agencies that dont charge you to name a few reputed ones bayt.com,clarendon parker,BAC ME, SOS recruitment, soundlines recruitment. post your resumes on these sites and iff possible talk to a representative there to explain your requirements.

3. It depends on your experience whether one month is enough to get a job, but a visit visa is valid for two months and i guess that time is sufficient to compare a few jobs and pick the one that suits you.

4. About approaching the vacancies
- your CV has to be strong.
- need to have excellent domain knowledge
- Apply for jobs that suit your profile
- be throughly prepared for the interview , study the company profile before you go for the interview.
- Gulf news appointments is a good source to apply.

About approach towards Iranians, i am not aware of it so am not the right person to comment on it.

I hope that answers a lot of your questions.

Cheers,

Jerry

I'd like to add that whenever u have working experience in Europe, u have an advantage when looking for a job in Dubai.

About your CV: U have to kinda sell yourself. A tip: blackmark your specialties in the CV, so it stands out  And when going to an interview: Just be friendly, answer only what they wanna hear, and, once again, ''sell yourself''. Mark your best qualities.

If you are looking for a big company (Multi-national) they will most likely have vacancies on their website.

pg.com
transmed.com
nestle.com

etc..

good luck!
