Civil engineer, need a little advice Oct 31, 2008
Could someone please help? I qualified as an engineer about 10 years ago. I am travelling to UAE next week to look for work on the contracting side of construction (not design). However, I have lost my degree papers - if I do find a job, do I need to present proof of degree to new employer? I have an excellent work history, so is this enough? Would new employer be patient enough to wait four-six weeks for replacements to come from university? Advice would be appreciated, starting to panic now...

hi there billy, get your application in to the university as soon as possible. it is a federal labour requirement for ALL employees to present their attested higher qualifications on application for a job. these have to be attested by the UAE consulate in the country where you obtained them, you cannot by law be issued with a labour card without presenting them at the department of labour with your labour application.

you may well be able to canvas for work on the basis of a copy, but no employer will even offer you a job without the attested original. there is plenty of work about, so getting to make one-on-one contact with a potential employer would be a good foot in the door (with or without papers).
