the thing about working in Dubai? Aug 21, 2006
i am an Asian lady with 4 +years of working experience in Finance area. Was being offered an opportunity to be posted to Dubai as a Finance & Business Manager. To begin with, the remuneration package is still unknown and the co is still working on the numbers. So any one can share with me what should i be expecting for the role that i will be playing?

In this forum, there are lots of people wanting to look for a job in Dubai or having some housing issue. In my case, this will be fixed. On that, maybe i should count my blessings. Yet on another side, i have many friends who told me to reconsider this posting. The environment maybe too tough for my liking.

I have already got another job offer to do consulting back home.

No idea which one I should choose, cos both careers are challenging and offer good exposure.

i'd suggest that you wait for the "numbers" to come back before you make your decision.

hovever, even at this early stage if the company who is offering you a job has no idea as to the package they are actually offering you i would take this as a sign of things to come! if this is an existing postion there should be an existing job description and package to go with it and it would be a simple issue of them sending you the offer.

if it is a new position they should still have some indication of what they were/ are prepared to offer...if they are keen to get you here ask them to give a a return ticket for a 2 day visit to dubai so that you can evaluate the company and dubai for yourself.

if you like, once you have a complete offer in writing from them, either post it on-line or pm one of the regulars on the forum for thier comments. contracts in the middle east have to be read and judged in thier entireity - never accept any verbal agreements - only written offers!

i'll be in dubai in mid sept Sep 02, 2006
thanks dbxsoul!

well.... i have made the decision to be in dubai  numbers are out, but not too fantastic a deal. will be there for a 6 wks operation/ business review in mid sept prior to applying my resident visa. since it's for the experience & exposure, will ask for a salary review once i m confident that i can deliver!

maybe a lil risky... but i suppose i jus got to take a chance n see where this decision will lead me to... if i really don't like it in dubai.. i can always be back home looking for a more comfortable job.

one life, live it!

I'd agree with dbxsoul - early warning signs of an organization when they can't compile package info prior to creating a role. But 4+ years is probably a stumbling block in terms of putting a package together, as Finance managers normally attain 7+ years of experience prior to gaining such postings, therefore setting up a solid benchmark in terms of remuneration range.

Having said that your salary range will also depend on the industry/sector you are working for.

sad to say, it's bec of the 'not-so-good' situation and thats why the HQ is getting me over to fix. the organisation is actually a subsidiary of a singapore parent co. the role is currently taken up by an Indian n is on local remuneration package. so it take the HQ awhile to work out the numbers on their budget to get me relocated and to fix the mess. and since i only have 4+ years of almost irrelevant experience to what i am goin to do there... i am definately not too expensive as compared to someone with more years of relevant experience. so i can only say.. i m coming to dubai to buy an experience n exposure. 8)

it's really not goin to be easy on me.. i have my learning curve and adaption to adjust!

Okay, I can relate to your situation cause I was also promoted to a finance manager only after 4 years of experience to wind down a contract, but for me it was to Indonesia and replacing an even more expensive expat than me.

All I can say is even though I was only getting 1/4 of the previous person's salary for essentially doing the same thing the experience and exposure the job gave me elevated me to where I am today and more than made up for the short term monetary differences back then. And from what you are mentioning I'm sure you already know this!
