Greece beat USA NBA 'Dream Team' Sep 02, 2006
Hahahahahaha - In your face America!!!!

I watched this game, it was awsome. Will it be Greek domination?

Thousands of jubilant fans took to the streets of major cities in Greece on Friday shortly after their basketball team stunned the US NBA star-studded "Dream Team" 101-95 in the semi-finals of the world championships in Saitama, Japan.

The epicenter of celebrations was in Athens' central Omonia square and outside the landmark White Tower in the northern port city of Thessaloniki.

All of Greece's leadership including Greek President Karolos Papoulias, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou sent congratulations to the team's players and coaches.

European champions Greece haven't had a single player playing in NBA.They will face Spain in the Sunday's final.

I am from Greece and I'm very proud for our team
The USA players were very confident while they had an advance in score, after the Greek team started to press them and the gap was getting smaller they started to lose their focus, eventually the've lost the game and it was a triumph of spirit and heart of the Greek team!!!

I was watching the game and i was shouting like crazy from joy, i got very excited to see that our players beat the "Dream Team".

Just to let you know, basketball in Greece is underestimated!!!!

Nevertheless, we don't care if we're going to get the golden medal, for us it's the same thing, our goal has been accomplished.

:wav: For Greece
But Chocos don't you think its kinda of wierd that we are Cheering for Greece cuz it kicked USA's A$$ and if someone else had beaten USA we would be cheering them too.
What really scares me is the fact that we are cheering USA's lose more than we are cheering for the winner

And there lies the root of America. It is not a team player.

Dude, it's not like that at all, I just have many Greek friends that's all and they were really proud that their team did so well. Plus think about it, Greece only has a population of 10 million or so, compared to the masses of 'talent' that supposedly lies in other more population countries.

With Basketball the US is always seen as the be all and end all. Greece has never had a player in the NBA, and yet they whooped their butss. I think it's a great achievement.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there. American teams of various sports tend to a collection of individuals, rather than a team.
For an excellent example, I look to the 2004 Ryder Cup. The European team thrashed the US team, despite the lowly world rankings of most of the team compared to the USA's all-stars. You could tell the whole weekend that the US team just didn't really want to be playing together, especially in the doubles matches.

2 things about the USA team:
1) the problem is not that they don't play team ball. The problem is that there is not a set national team that has been playing/practicing together for years like most of the other nations have. This same Greek team that won the European championship last year. They are definately a great team.
2) Many of the best American players don't even bother coming to play. That is what made the REAL Dream Team in '92 so special, because then it was really the elite players of the NBA.

Ahh.....and basketball was invented by a Canadian.

At Springfield College (1890-1895)(which was then the Y.M.C.A. training school), James Naismith (born in Canada), under the direction of American phys-ed specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, invented the indoor sport of basketball.

I still say the game was invented in the USA

Chocco babe, there will only ever be one true "Dream Team". C'mon, Jordan, Magic and Bird together - nothing will ever match that.

Bingo, the 1992 dream team. With a whole cast of "all time greats" I just named a few.

Yeah, they were good - don't think any team will ever match them!
You could tell when they won the gold that year, that the money didn't matter - it was the fact they'd won the gold - which meant more to them than probably any other honor.
Its a shame, because now you get the feeling that in many sports, they are just there for the money first, and if they get a medal or trophy along the way, well its just a nice bonus.
Brings a whole new meaning to the "its not about winning, its about taking part"!!

It is unfair to think of NBA players as a group of selfish and spoiled ____. While there are some rotten apples in any bunch, as a group you can say that they love and respect the game that they play, the give back to their community and they serve as role models.
