I was wondering about the different types of traditional headgear worn by Emirati and other Gulf Arab men.

Do they indicate tribal affliations?

Some younger men just wear baseball caps. Are they trying to just look cool? Or, are they perhaps trying to hide something?

Obviously its a culture thing(thats why you placed it in this topic). And yeah maybe it differs per location. Saudians and most Kuwaiti used that red and white checkered while Emarati uses plain white.

Wouldnt it be better if there were more colors such as pink, or yellow orneon green on top of their heads? One arab friend of mine from Syria used to call it the "zero" ... interpret it for yourself.

Although I had read about the baseball cap with dishdasha look before coming to the UAE, it still struck me as a bit funny when I actually saw young local lads wearing such combos for the first time.

Well I had an additional question here, regarding Emirati women. I noticed a few who wear some kind of metal thingy that hangs in front of their face or sometime to the side. Pretty surprising the 1st time you see it as I hardly see its purpose and I doubt it's fun having a metallic thing dangling in front of ur eyes...

The burqa, a veil of coarse, black silk with a central stiffened rib resting on the nose allowing only the eyes to be clearly seen, is still worn in the street, particularly by older women. Mashakhes made from gold adorn the burkha and al kaleeb are sewn on both sides to fasten it up on the face.

ditto and also the plain white haggar with no black thingy on top. I think emiratis men are more wacky & laid back compared to other GCC arab males. I find most Qataris neat and tidy, and they can really carry their Kandura pretty well and that makes them a little sophisticated amongst GCC arabs.

And I am pretty scared to arab guys wearing the checkered white & red haggar. Dunno it's a mindset i believe.
