For instance we call Israel "The Holy land" (I shrink to my seat whenever our priest say it in prayer)

It's called The Holy Land, because it's the birth place of Abraham, the spiritual "father" of all three major religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It also holds a special "holiness" to Chrisitians because Jesus was born and died there.

Actaully it isn't. He was born in Ur, which is somewhere around the Syria/Iraq/Turkey border.
But he did die in Israel.

Mraph - you beat me to the explanation that Abraham was an Iraqi (on today's map).

You guys are right, Abraham was not born in the Holy Land, though he died there. Abraham's immigration to the Holy Land is the significant factor in fulfilling God's decrees. However, exact birth place is still not known, but rather the attributed place of birth is more in the following of tradition. It is believed to be in modern day Iraq but some people also believe that it is in modern day Turkey. The search for the exact location of Abraham's birth place still continues for some scholars.
