Milk + Expiration Dates

milk + expiration dates Jun 10, 2006
the milk i've seen at supermarkets have 4 day expiration dates.. when i asked the few guys here at work.. they said it was because the milk is "fresh" and that it really does go bad in 4 days.. if i want the milk to last longer they said i should purchase the stuff in a can.

In the states.. milk had a 2 week or so expiration date.. so that's what i'm used to.. is the expiration date really just a best-sell date? or does it really expire in 4 days time..

fresh milk here has preservatives in it to prolong the shelf and open shelf life of the milk. normally in summer if you were to open a bottle of milk and leave it out, within an hour is would be spoilt, within a day it looks something like yougart (and smells like a rotting corpse!). however if you open a bottle of milk and only use a little from the bottle each day, and refrigerate it, it will then last up to a week before spoiling.

in many countrys the pasturise the milk to destroy any biological/ bacterial content which would contribute to the milk spoiling more quickly.

you get long life milk here as well (in cartons), which can stay open, unrefrigerated for a few days - personally i think it tastes crap and prefer fresh milk.

Soul

In the states and UK, we now have milk that is treated to take away bacteria and it has a long shelf/fridge life compared to standard pasturised milk.

Basically it is standard fresh milk that is "fine filtered" to remove excess bacteria.

We can now buy fresh milk that can be opened and kept in a fridge for 2/3 weeks. This is not available in Dubai.

ah.... okay, then again if you haven't used the milk within 4 days, you shouldn't have bought it in the first place ... :)

ah, those batchelor days .... where have they gone :?

Hmmm....

The Young Ones is close to Men Behaving Badly like Hummer H2 is close to a Suzuki Jimny.

MBB was pretty funny though  .

Milk seems ok for more than 4 days here usually. You can easily tell when it's no good anymore - it tastes funny  ...
