Moving to dubai May 14, 2006
Hi can sum1 help me pls?

Im a journalist and I'm writing an article about how to get your possesions moved from the uk to dubai in 1 piece.

I was hoping if anybody who has recently moved to dubai could tell me about the probs faced when trying to relocate all of their possesions.

Any help would be very much appreciated

I moved here a few months back and got my things shipped. Everything was perfectly in order when it arrived in Dubai in less than 3 weeks. Offcourse it was shipped from Singapore, not UK.

Use one of the big boys (Pickfords or Crown) the cheapest way, if you have enough stuff is either a 20ft or a 40ft container. Its a flat rate by size and they can pack it all properly in the UK. They unpack everything for you here, but you do have to be present at customs in the port when it arrives so they can inspect. No booze, no dodgy books or videos. Simple really.

Good luck!

I am moving to Dubai in a few weeks. I am inquiring Pickfords and International movers PLC for quotes. I am really nervous about having my stuff shipped over as I hope it gets there with no issues.

I've had my things shipped around a few times now, Uk to Finland to Denmark to Sweden to Australia and now currently enroute to Dubai. One thing I've learnt is that make sure your present when they are packing and give them exact instructions what to pack. If you don't, they will pack up everything, literally. Last time I moved, a couple of empty winebottles came along as well. Especially if your living in furnished rented accomodation, you need to watch they don't pack your landlords stuff away as well.

Other than that, expect to have a couple of things damaged. Remote controls seem to be pretty vunerable for some reason. Make sure you over estimate how much stuff you have, in every move I've made I've been suprised at how much crap I've acculumated. And try to ship as much as you can instead of taking it in your suitcase on the airplace. Again, everytime I've moved, I've ended up having far too much to carry myself and had to leave stuff behind. Don't forget the books, DVDs etc that you've loaned out to people that suddenly appear on the day your flying out and the day after the removal company has left.

Other than that, good luck and good luck to my stuff too, it's probably just of the coast of Perth right now.

Cheers,

International Removals from the U.K. Jun 02, 2006
We ship household and personal effects worldwide. All goods are professionally packed and insured. We offer an all inclusive door-to-door service. Never self pack your goods as you will not get insurance for loss, damage or breakages. It is a false economy to try to save money by self packing. Professional packers use the correct materials and export grade boxes. We ship to Jebel Ali, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

If you would like a quotation or literature on overseas moves please check out our website http://www.bargateinternational.com we have an online enquiry form. We offer a free no obligation packing survey whereby our surveyors will visit your home and advise on any special packing requirements. They will also calculate the total amount of cubic metres your goods take up in order to determine if you require a 20' or 40'container. If less, then your goods are shipped "groupage" , which means your goods are shipped in a container alongside other household effects going to the UAE. If you self pack goods, it is likely that your goods would be shipped alongside general merchandise going to the UAE. This is a less favourable way as you could incure damage when goods are unloaded and handled alongside other goods.

chill pall

people get their ferraris chipped, don't worry, the ship will not sink, hopefully ;-)

i understand your concerns about unpredictable things, like get lost, and problems...

i don't have this problem since i don't have many material things rather cash&gold and use the airplane

but as i have read people with possesions use a container and ship it to dubai (heaven has a price)

all those EADs with all those EADs I bought me jacuzzis and sauna and a lot of stuff over here and more space than Dubai

but Dubai calls me, the goldsoeks needs me :)

Hi,

One thing to make sure of. If your company is paying the shipping costs, make sure they have an arrangement with the shipping company whereby they will actually put the container on a ship before the invoice has been paid. My company didn't and now I've been here a month and my stuff is still in Sydney waiting for payment before they will move the box an inch. Don't know how true it is but according to my HR rep, payments generally take a month to process over here.

Cheers,
Shaun

We've moved some 13 times in less years and I can tell you stuff always gets broken. So my rule of thumb is to ask the company to waive the excess or to pay that themselves. Response is "there will be no breakages/loss etc". My response is "then you've got nothing to lose!!" Always check out policies for type of replacement ie new for old and mechanical derangement ie if your computer doesn't work the other end to get it repaired you have to have had a type of insurance specific to electrical items and you would have to list their serial number.
