Navigation-GPS-Solution - or how to use a Streetmap in dxb May 20, 2006
Hi,

Some cars (especially the higher priced) have a navigationsystem installed with a UAE MAP
Which Datas are they using?I mean from which company are the datas supplied?

Is there a good solution available to be installed in a car without a already installed system?Kind of a mobile device?
Who has got any experience with that?

To read a streetmap here is nothing like europe. You´ve got street numbers here which don´t say a lot about the final position of the street when you are actually there. What i mean is, whenever i was comparing a area where i had to go by an official Dubai Streetmap, i had to realize that the area looks totally different to the map.

Here's a couple, don't know if that's what you mean...

http://www.myeasynav.com/
http://www.gps-ae.com/
http://www.mapmiddleeast.org/company/index.asp

There's one more I've seen in computer shops - software to install on your PDA but I can't remember the name and can't find it now.

Wow i´m surprised, i couldn´t find any of the links with like "common" words in google.ae.

but there is no software available yet, which could run on a mobile device like a Nokia Series 60 (6680, N70) or a Sonyericsson P910i.

That´s surprising, because the datas (maps) seem to be available

Well buy a PDA then, anyway the sceen sizes on Nokia's etc are too small to see a decent sized map anyway.

I think you can get PDA's that also work as phones. Or Phone's that work as PDA's! Either way, they need to run Windows Mobile for the software to work. I believe you can get these. Oh, then you've got to buy the actual GPS box too. It can start to get tricky and expensive - and you'll have wires everywhere!!

The biggest question would be: Is it reliable? Will it be an efficient navigation. How old are the datas on the SD Card, how often will they be updated.

Must first look into it. A Windows mobile shouldn´t be a problem. In Fact they are very good phones.

Thanks for all the statements.

1600 Dhs might be a lot of money to some people Arnie!! Not like us "rich" folks (I wish!)

Sorry,

i would not agree with all the money in the world to just buy something before i know about what i´m buying and what it´s able to do.
I would like to test it for myself, and then decide to buy it or not.

In City Centre are a few shops where the people can explain it to you.
If any interesst i´ll post the final result by the end of the week.

I've already got it buddy, but i dont have the same stress levels as you.

When you next buy a washing machine , ask if they will let you test it out at home beforehand.

I have to disagree with you in this case arnie. Buying a washing machine is completely different. You want it to wash clothes, and you know pretty much what is going to be the outcome - clean clothes (hopefully!).
However, in this case its completely different. To use your example, it would be like saying:

"hmm, a washing machine - well I'm not sure I want my clothes to be so clean - I can get by with just hand washing them in the sink".

Do you see my point??

Sorry to say that mate:
But i think there is a bit of a difference. Obvioulsy not for all people.
That´s why we are different. Finally i would not ask anything about a washing machine and my question was not shell i buy one or not.

First posting - bull shot.

That was exactly what i was looking for. I´m gonna order the Route66 Software. I know it from Europe and it was very very reliable.

In case of somebody who has the software already, pls post your opinion.

I’m using Tomtom Software for Europe, I'm very happy with that. Link:
http://www.tomtom.nl/products Unfortunately they don’t have map for Middle East.

For Middle East I am using Navigon software in my PDA. It's Ok.
Some of new areas you can not find in the map; especially Gardens and Greens surrounding.
But POI's are not so bad. Almost all restaurants and hotels you can find.
