Recycling: Where In Dubai?

Recycling: Where in Dubai? May 12, 2006
Folks,

I have probably over 100 empty cans and plastic bottles I don't want to throw them out in the garbage (but them my apt will look like a street persons abode). Anyone know a please to recycle them? I live in the Marina Area.

And you do know whether I just simply bring them in or is there a hazzle.

I am surprised (or maybe should not be) that there is no recycling program in Dubai (at least none that I am aware of)

Thanks.

No but recycling doesn't hurt anybody.

It's like wearing a seatbelt - you don't have to but if you don't: perhaps a fine, a bump in the forehead or death.

Arniegang is a lost cause I think

I'm not sure where you live concord, but there are recycling bins at some gas stations, and local shopping centres - you just need to check your local area. Our area (Springs) has a new recycling program, but I don't know what their range of service is. We have just signed up and are waiting for our Project Green Earth boxes. On a certain day in the week they will come to our door and collect cans, glass, newspapers, cardboard, and plastic. Awesome :D

DESS also have recycling containers at the front of the school on Oud Metha. I always think that Dubai Recycling is an oxymoron.
You buy five items and get six plastic bags.

Sorry, being a JJ (Jumeirah Jane) and a mummy I forgot you wouldn't know! It is a school-Dubai English Speaking School-they have the containers at the front of the school inside the gate-the guard at the gate is a nice bloke and he'll point you in the right direction.

Spinneys on Trade Centre Road has recycling bins at the back, not sure if any of the others do. Just glass plastic and paper for now but sure they will refine it and we'll have a full system for cans and stuff before too long.

It surprises the hell out of me just how much rubbish I generate in the this country! Just chucking it all in the bin is a crime...back home we would never have done it and I think it is a good thing for everyone to do...before we all drown in little blue plastic bags, non biodegradable plastic water bottles and crap McDonalds boxes that have a half life of about a million years!

Take a trip down the Emirates Road and, just as you get to Sharjah, wind down your car window and try to breathe! The municipal waste dump there creates a smell that is almost undescribable!

Recycling is the law in many European coutries now, why not here?

Thanks Gab,

Now that I know what it is; where is it? Perhaps closer to the Marina than the other suggestions.

But Arnie me old mucker...aren't you worried where all the empty champagne bottles and foie gras (go for his ankles Chocs!!!!) tins end up after you dump them outside? When the pile reaches your balcony what then?

I have to say I have been recycling all my Turkish Delight wrappers and they make wonderful thermal blankets for terrapins!

My wooden stirring spoon has honed edges!!!

I wonder whether the reclycling centers above mentioned will have a reaction to recycling beer cans and wine or hard liquor bottles. Could be interesting.

Actually I heard somewhere that every single McDonalds container and every single 'disposable' nappy (diaper for the Yanks!) that has ever been made is still in existence and will be 1,000 years from now! Apparently they dont break down! Burning them releases toxic gases into the atmosphere, so most are either dumped in landfills or ground down to make duvets fillings or something!

Hurrumph!

That's why in environmentally minded countries they only use recyclable packaging - ie. plastic wrappers & cardboard boxes. Makes sense.
