Or perhaps "The current time is eight minutes until twelve."

There's no 'until' at all! It's 8 minutes TO 12!

It's like saying 5 and 20 past 8!

Of course there is an until It is quite OK to say, it will be 8 minutes until 12. One can also say 8 minutes TO 12, but in actual fact, I think the UNTIL is more gramatically correct.

It's not. I can only assume it's an Americanism - sigh.
