10k will get you the bare basics for furniture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i mean bare basics.

basic prices for some lower end items are:

stove 1,400
fridge 1,000 although you'll probably need 2
washing machine 1,400
dryer 1,000
tv 1,000
dvd 800-1,000
living room furniture chairs/ couch 3,500

(depends on the brand though)

rental is normaly divided into three pdc's split over the year, they may also ask for a security deposit up front. so you don't pay all the rent in one go, but you commit yourself to paying it. don't bounce the cheque or you'll end up in sh.t

On the other hand, you may be able to find a place that alllows you to save lots of money. Think of "budget accomodations" or "hostels (europe)" These are known here as "labor camps" (for workers as most of us in the forum are);

Pro's
No Need to purchase your own car
Don't have to buy furniture
No real estate broker's fee (10% of annual rent)
Save lot of money
Transportation included (although the Air Conditioning may be questionable) - but it is a large fleet of buses.
Lots of people for you to meet.
No need for a dry cleaning or laundry bill (you can wear the same clothes for a while - at least the same color)
No real state brokarage fee (10% of annual rent)

Con's
Your neibhors may not necessary speak either French or English
The bus schedules may not be that frequent to your destination (typically every 12 hours)
There may not be much privacy (3224 people per average size bedroom)
Can't complaint much to management - 1 complaint = one flight home (or a beating - don't know).
Internet or web sites service may have more to do with fishing nets or spiders than your familiarity with those terms is thus far.
Satellite and cable probably limited - to nothing (star gazing maybe!)
Choice of supermarkets probably limited.
Probably no conjugal visists (but your girfriend may be able to find similar accomodations)

Bottom line: Get more money!

i'd like to put the package into perspective.

i came to dubai 5 years ago and got a similar deal. i was able to have a good/ comfortable lifestyle on this, and saved quiet a bit of money!

now, due to the depressed dollar and recent monetary increases in most facets of life (in dubai) i definitly would not be able to survive on this package - and this is without any dramatic changes in my standard of living!

i will be moving to Dubai within the next few months and i would like to know what are the average cost of life there. I need a clean appartment for one person in a nice building with security. Also, i would like an avergae car (peugeot)..Can you tell me how much will it cost me monthly..

I suggest a search within the forum (and see above). Loads of previous suggestions. In summary I would say that an average apartment/car is comparable to any large (first world) city around the world (on average). Of course it depends on what you are looking for. I suppose you could share "bed space" for 500 dirhams a month or get a villa for 250,000 dirhams. Lots of choices on where to live and what to rent (just depends on what you are willing, or can afford to pay). No great deals!

Obviously flat sharing (if that is an option) may be the best way for you to go.
