Photo editing Apr 12, 2012
I hope Nucleus can help me, or anyone else, but I'd like to try to edit one of my own digital photos so that I can add and change colours and submit it to one of the stores that print the photo onto canvas and stretch frame it. What software are you using to edit your photos? I've got GIMP 2.0, but there is a bit of a learning curve using it - its free though! If anyone has had their photo printed on canvas, did it turn out nicely, or are there some specifications I need to consider for best results?

I almost missed this thread. Anyhow, I use 'Digital Photo Professional' and Photoshop. GIMP is open source and free alternative to photoshop, and both are for graphic designers and hence interface is very complicated. Good photo editing software geared toward photographers is Adobe Lightroom and Apple Apperture. But both are commerical.

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom.html

Above two are industry standard for pro photographers, both are good.

If you have canon or nikon dslr, they bundle photo editing software for free and they are very good.

I've canon so I've this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Photo_Professional

I'll upload before and after photos later.

I don't know any good free or open source photo editing software geared toward photography but I heard good things about Paint.Net. This software is for graphic designing but it has easier interface than both Photoshop and GIMP. So it maybe something in close to what you are looking for without spending a fortune.

More information about this software on wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint.NET

Me, not yet. But I'll soon. Trying to find an place that is good at printing on canvas and not too expensive. Found a studio but they were charging too much, they are on Jumeriah Beach Road.

In those two photos it was DPP (Digital Photo Professional) comes free with canon dslr and some of its compacts. Just showing don't have to buy expensive software for changing tones, contrast, exposure, etc... for improving the quality of the photo.

If you have a Nikon DSLR, there is a software which is included in the packaging called Nikon View NX 2.

Here is my photo that I've been editing. I adjusted the contrast to highlight the separations between the stones, and make the brown and green moss growing on the carvings pop a bit more.

A bit late to the topic but.

Gimp2.8 was finally released and it is a really improved version of Gimp, worth trying.

Very nice photo btw.

Well, to be honest, if your purpose is just to take pics and make some contrast and color correction, then any software can be used. But if the intend is to go professional or maybe make money by photography or photo retouching then I must say, Adobe Photoshop is industry standard, and I would recommend that you must get your hands dirty with it, as its not hard and youtube is huge free resource for it.

Also I would like to mention I will be absoultely available for photo retouching or photgraphy helps and tips if anyone is interested.

Cheers!!

I always use Adobe Lightroom because it's just so much better than the crappy included editors that come with cameras e.t.c. It is a bit expensive though but it's definitely worth it. Btw if you're going to edit photos then you MUST shoot in RAW, jpeg's generally suck at everything ;)
