any Linux Expert for a question regarding mod_rewrite? Apr 27, 2011
Greeting to all readers,
I hope that I can find a solution to my problem here.
Scenario:
I installed Redhat Enterprise 5.
I installed MySQL, Apache and PHP.

I enabled mod_rewrite in httpd.conf.

I made the following tests to make sure it is working fine:
1- Installed Wordpress, and put the Permalink setting on Day and Name, but it kept on giving 404 error.
2- Installed Joomla, and in the SEO Settings I did the following:
- enabled: Search Engine Friendly URL, disable: Use Apache mod_rewrite, the Short URLs were working.
- enabled: Search Engine Friendly URL, enabled: Use Apache mod_rewrite, the Short URLs NOT working

.htaccess used in both softwares....

wordpress
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /wordpress/
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /wordpress/index.php [L]
</IfModule>

# END WordPress

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

joomla

# beginning of line), reload your site in your browser and test your sef url's. If they work,
# it has been set by your server administrator and you do not need it set here.

In your apache config file is mod_rewrite enabled?. Had the same issue, enabled it in the apache config file, restarted, worked!. Please do post back here if you find a solution.

Thanks EsssARR for your reply, atthough my post is very old, was in 2007.

In the years from that time till today, I leared a lot.

- The best linux for web hosting is CentOS
- I learned how to build a secured web host server
- I can install and manage different types of CMSs. Joomla, WordPress and even non-linux like SharePoint with Load balancing and High availability.

I really don't remember how did I fix my problem with mod_rewrite, but I'm not having that issue anymore.

Thanks for replying :)
