Just had a thought. They might not be chocolate. We have paste eggs in the UK. They are eggs from hens) which are cooked with onion skins to change their colour. Where I live in England this is a tradition of 'carling Sunday' the week before Easter (palm Sunday).
Carlings are peas that are soaked and boiled with various flavourings. I've never tried them myself. They look like bird food and are said to give you terrible wind.
