Perhaps someone could explain what these two verses mean when taken separately and together:
Koran 4:12 - If a man or a woman have no heir direct, but have a brother or a sister, to each of the two a sixth; but if they are more numerous than that, they share equally a third
4:176 - If a man perishes having no children, but he has a sister, she shall receive a half of what he leaves, and he is her heir if she has no children. If there be two sisters, they shall receive two-thirds of what he leaves; if there be brothers and sisters, the male shall receive the portion of two females. God makes clear to you, lest you go astray; God has knowledge of everything.
Uh, say what?
First of all, what is v4:12 saying? The translation says "brother or sister"; so is the verse talking about one sibling or two? The verse then says "to each of the two a sixth", presumably meaning the Koran is really talking about two siblings.
But unfortunately, v4:176 says something entirely different. If a man or woman has two sisters, they receive 2/3. So, wait; one verse says two siblings will get only 1/6 but another verse says two sisters will get 2/3.
Makes sense, right?
But wait, the verse goes on to say a brother shall get the portion of two females. So how can verse 4:12 say a "brother or sister" each get 1/6 when v4:176 says brothers get twice of a sister. If v4:12 is talking about leaving behind two sisters or two brothers, then it clearly contradicts v4:176 which says two sisters should cumulatively get 2/3 inheritance, not 1/6 & 1/6 (1/3).
