Earlier this month, Huffington Post published the below - showing the results of a recent survey. In 2008 it was 1 in 10 - now 1 in 6 - and almost 1 in 4 for white evangelical Protestants!

“After nearly four years in the Oval Office, President Obama is incorrectly thought to be Muslim by one in six American voters, and only one quarter of voters can correctly identify him as a Protestant, according to a new poll.”
“While Americans across the board get the president’s religion wrong, the religious group that most often thinks Obama is Muslim is white evangelical Protestants (24 percent). American unaffiliated with a religious group make the error least often: just 7 percent identify Obama as Muslim.

Birthers speculate that he is a US citizen born outside the US, therefore inelligible to serve as president of the US in accordance with US constitutional law.

That is exactly what they are doing "speculating". It's been going on for years and they have failed to prove that his brith certificate is a forgery.

As to the claim of him being Muslim: Although Islamic religious custom is that a male child shall follow the path of Islam, it isn't necessarily true when two religions are involved. I know of a couple where the father is Muslim, mother Christian and the children are raised as Christians. That decision was made due to the fact that the father was not a practicing Muslim, but the mother was a practicing Christian. I also know of a mixed religious marriage where the boy is raised Muslim and the girls Christian.
