Special Needs. May 16, 2012
I was browsing another topic and saw that Nucleus posted, 'Just ignore him, he's special'.

It got me wondering about how other people treat other unfortunate people with special needs in other cultures and countries. Do you ignore them, as Nucleus suggests?

In the UK we try to try to treat people with special needs with care and consideration and intergrate them into society as much as possible. I realise this may not be the case with other cultures and that people who others do not consider 'normal', what ever that is, may be kept out of sight as they are an embarrassment to their families.

I always think it is very sad when people mock the afflicted.

There, for the grace of God, go I.

wow, recently posts are about me. Of course not, I don't ignore them. Do you?

As for the comment to mikehunt, you have never used the word "retarted?" I don't mean he is retarted, neither I meant he is special in the same way. Just to make it clear. I wasn't making fun of people with special needs.

And personally what you have done?

What do you mean posts are about you Nucleus? You seem to start topics about you so what do you expect?
I'm not having a go, don't get me wrong, if your culture ignores people with special needs, who am I to critise? I was just interested, that's all.

'Special needs' is just a polite way to refer to people who are mentally retarded.

You should embrace all types of people Nucleus, it may help you with your creativity.

My culture doesn't ignore people with special needs. But what you have done personally?

MrsMills wrote:'Special needs' is just a polite way to refer to people who are mentally retarded.
I've great respect for such people and what I do each year for them, you won't believe it anyway.

While the UAE has one of the highest rates of Down Syndrome, you would still very rarely see one in public. Awareness programs in the UAE have started in the previous decade.

It is true that you very rarely see people with special needs out and about in the UAE. The place is hardly made friendly for the disabled. I have seen the odd person in a wheel chair, and there are special schools for children here, but mostly they're kept away from the general populous it seems, which I find very sad.

I used to design and make sensory toys for children who were very severely disabled. I got a great sense of satisfaction from that and there's nothing like seeing the face of a child light up at something you've done for them.

Families I know are not like that, and in the parks in local areas do see them. Although in malls not much. Another possible reason, large population is here is job based, percentage is higher but numbers are not that high.

Birth numbers: http://www.rightdiagnosis.com/d/down_sy ... ountry.htm

Moratility numbers of people with DS: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/mor_d ... n-syndrome

Study specific to UAE http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17159360

Major reason is higher mean maternal age. Overall rate is (2.2 per 1,000) that is 0.22 % in the study.

Why indulge all of this nonsense. MrsMills is BM, as is mikehunt. She needs to use one alias to stick up for another - because she's classy like that. Just ignore BM. Another alias bites the dust.

Seriously, we're dealing with Hydra here... cut one head off and two more spring up in its place.

Nucleus, Is it possible that you can enter into a conversation with out replying LOL to a comment?

You made a comment to ignore someone because they are special and I challenged you on that. I asked if your culture ignored people with special needs. I don't find your post funny at all.

You claim (I think) that you are helping people with special needs, or retarded, as you say, but you don't say how. Do you think, by donating money to charity, you are helping people wth special needs? By throwing money, yet making fun of retartded people on an internet forum, is really fulfilling your need to be a 'good person'?

You are kidding yourself Nucleaus! By making your 'throw away' remark to ignore people with special needs you show you are like most people and want to distance themselves from those who are less fortunate.
Thank God most people are not like you!

You seem to be somewhat confused Nucleus, or are you trying to defuse the situation? You were clearly disrespecting some unfortunate people with your remark to ignore people with special needs. I blame it on your culture, not you.

Its fascinating to see the mood swings in the troll's posts. I guess the frustration builds up with each baiting post that crashes and fails - and most of the time the troll is speaking to herself or another sad gang member. So Sad.. :)

Yeah, I don't have tolerance for this anymore. BM has serious issues and I don't have space in my life for wingnuts.

I'm sure Nucleus appreciates the weak attempts to derail the tpopic of why he thinks people with special needs should be ignored.

I see he has offended someone who's cousin has special needs on his other topic.

May be there should be a campaign in the media, or something, to try to educate people to understand that those people with special needs should be treated with the respect offered to 'normal' people?

No, he didn't offend, he was asking a question and Khaled took it the wrong way. There was miscommunication. But hey you love to blame other forumers don't you. I don't think it was a particularly well thought out question, but non-the-less, not hard to understand.

Are you taking it upon yourself to speak for Khaled?

I think it was quite clear that he was offended!

It was obvious that he didn't really understand the original question. That happens sometimes, easily done. If you look at Nucleus other posts it pretty clear he has the upmost respect and actually helps those with special needs. His question was related to something else entirely.
