Hi,

I'm going to be in Dubai for a few days this coming weekend and early next week.

I'm buying some 'toys' on my company's expense - a Macbook Pro 13", Ipad and Iphone - and also for personal use a BD player with DNLA ( I have loads of luggage space free, and the goodies are all for me - an early birthday present from the company).

I know it would be cheaper in the Far East or States, or perhaps even UK after deducting VAT - however, for various reasons I need to buy these over this weekend.

I know there is a Apple dealer in MoE near the cinema, and also Computercare in Dubai Mall and Al Ain centre - but which of these would you suggest, and is there another place? I know Carrefour and the other supermarkets do Ipads.

BTW - this will be the first real visit to Dubai for 3 years - I've transited a few times since leaving but this time round I'm spending a few days there.

Wish I could help Shaf, but I shopped for my pc in some computer mall in Deira, I believe. Don't know if they have any Apple retailers in there.

Shaf, unfortuantely I think it will be cheaper to get the MAC from UK although I am not upto date on Mac prices since being a PC user and all

Check souq.com from price comparisons as they usually have good deals. But takes a few dats for stuff to arrive.

The store you mention is Ibn Batutta and not MoE and its not an official store, its called istyle, here is the official Apple online store link you can check prices there aswell.

Also I've found Geant supermakrket again in Ibn Butta has some of the best deals in electronics, I live close by and was there today aswell and can go look up the price if you're intrested.

Although you might find some better deals on grey imports in computer street ( Al Ain Plaza and the billion stores around it )

And yeah would be great to meet up, gimme a shout when and where.

I've done some research and the mac book pro is a little cheaper in Dubai - Computer Care offer it for slightly less than the UK, but the Ipads and Iphone are slightly more expensive. If I had the time, I'd get them from Hong Kong - but timing wise I need the stuff asap and Dubai prices are better value than Mauritius, so I'm saving money by buying there.

The MoE shop I'm thinking about is the one near the cinema in MoE - it isn't a dedicated Mac store, just has some macs in there. I also saw that Carrefour have the Ipads and Iphones.. so I'll check there. I'll also have a look at the iStyle in Ibn Bat as well.

I will avoid the grey imports - as I need the international warranties.

Maybe there is another Mac shop in Moe, but iStyle is also right next to the cinemasat China court in Ibn Buttuta, coincidence ? Anyways yes seems like Computer Care do have a good offer. Anyways, be seeing ya !

There is a little shop in MCC which sells only Apple products. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of it. Also, is there a specific reason in why you are buying all Apple stuff? I have been following the Apple vs Android debate for a decent amount of time and I know for a fact that Android is superior to Apple, regarding IPhones, Ipads and iPods. If you want, I can give you some new Android products which are cheaper than iPhone,(and better also) some Android tablets and great PCs which are in the same price range a Mac, but are significantly better.

I ended up buying all the goodies in Dubai Mall. The Mac Book Pro was on offer at Computer Care for 4799 Dhs whereas everywhere else it was 5399.. so a bit of a bargain. Full warranty etc. Ipad from Virgin was best deal (cheapest place there for the smart cover) - and Iphone 4s widely available at roughly the same price (unlocked, international version - not the UAE version).

Why Apple? The quality and feel - and fits my needs perfectly. Currently typing this at a coffee shop using the shiny new MBP!

(I also travel around a lot and give loads of presentations etc .. the MB and Iphone combo is one I was impressed with..)

Hubby is buying an ipad - our first Apple product, so we'll see how we like it.

I understand why people buy Apple stuff but not for me, way overpriced and you dont get much for paying so much extra aswell.

Ask your self why do you need an Ipad ( or tablet ) in the first place ? If you want to be one of the cool kids and have the most snazziest gadets around then I guess there is no alternative. If you want mobile computing get a netbook, less than half the price and very mobile.

Personaly if I must have a tablet, I'd go for the Samsung Galaxy. But hey different strokes for different folks, at the end of the day you'll be the one stuck with using it so don't let any of this cime in the way, but all I'm saying is do your research as to what eles is out there and not buy Apple just because everybody is dancing around it.

I say this as I myself was finally about to cave in a get myself a iphone, thinking lemme see what all this hoo has is about, so after looking into it with some depth, comparisons etc etc. I felt the Windows Phone 7 specially with their Mango update not only matched it but beat it hands down, so went for a WP7 device, infact so pleased with it got the missus one too

That probably means, he falls under the cool kids category ! lol

And yes most of the people I know who have bought one, after a week or so after the novelty wears off is usually relegated to use by the kids to play games on and since it does not support flash or java usually mean you'll end up paying for more crap like apps and games from istore.

If you want an alternative to the Ipad, then you should get an Android tablet. I recommend you wait for the Acer Iconia Tab A510 or A700. There are other tabets such as Galaxy Tab 10.1, but they are dual core whilst the ones I suggested come with the newly developed quad core advantage. You can get the Asus Transformer Prime but that lacks in 3G connectivity.
