then why is it spelt Diwali?

lol really? i remember my indian professor in uni pronouncing w/v sounds like it was reverse "vile we are in the subject of standard deviation..."

Don't know, but same as all German's pronounce W's as V's I guess.

Hmmm...don't know about that one. Some Germans do interchange "v", "w" and "f". Also depens a lot from which area they are. Never heard a German say mein Veib instead of mein Weib. Volkswagen is usually pronounced as Folkzwwaagen. In English in general they say Willage instead of Village. Thats changing the v for the w, the other way around.

The "W" is a very strange letter. After some research it appears in German it is used for the voiced labiodental fricative.
