Muckman - as arnie said, I made the move last week.
Well, firstly let me say that finding this forum is a good start!
I read as much about the place as I could and as a result the guys here have been impressed with my knowledge of the issues/places. However, it is still a world of difference between reading about places/issues on line and actually experiencing them.
That said, I have been forewarned and haven’t been surprised yet.
In terms of a check list – things that I did, in no particular order were:
- get loads of passport photos and copies of your passport, photo page. Also, as soon as you get here, get a copy of the visit visa stamp in your passport – I did not do this and the passport is off with the authorities for my employment visa, and I’m being asked left right and centre for a copy of that page..!
- for passport photos – try epassportphoto.com – just upload a digital print, it converts it into 8 passport photo jpeg which you can download and get printed everywhere. I actually e-mailed this ahead of my visit and my company used this to process the initial visa. There are loads of on-line processing that do introductory offers – I used snapfish and pixmania and as a result have about 100 photos of myself and the family for a matter of a few pounds.
- I was e-mailed across the initial employment visa and thought you needed to collect the original on arrival – you don’t, they have it on the system, so just go straight through to passport control (and if you’re British, they’ll just stamp a visit visa at immigration control). Also, if you do get an advance employment visa, ignore the small print at the bottom which says you need a return ticket etc.
- If you meet the criteria, open up an HSBC Premier account or equivalent, and you will be able to transfer money between the UK and UAE without a fee – otherwise you have to pay for transfers. It also meant I opened up a Dubai account when I got here.
- Be prepared for no postal deliveries to home – you need to give a PO Box (I am using my work address)
- You may want to get an international driving licence – up until you get a residence visa you won’t be able to buy a car. Some rental places require the international driving licence, but I’m also told that you can rent a car with a UK driving licence as long as you’re still on a visit visa.
- Bring currency for taxis etc – I used travellex and ordered over the internet, and collected at the airport before flying out. They had the best rates from my brief search
- Familiarise yourself with the currency and don’t make the mistake I did mistaking a 10 DHs note for what I thought was a 1 Dhs note (they don’t exist)
- Check out the classifieds if you need to rent or buy accommodation – gulfnews.com has a classified sections. Rents there are a good indication of what you’d be asked for on the ground. You can get a good indication of what is available at what cost
- Note that houses and apartments here are generally bigger than in the UK – bear this in mind when considering what you want to get
- Bring sunglasses – these are not optional (although you probably can buy them here cheaper than the UK)
- You need to judge where to live in terms of price and travelling times to work etc – a 10 min journey with no traffic turns into a 1hr traffic jams regularly – believe the horror stories.
- (Actually, I haven’t seen an accident yet… may be we’ve been lucky?)
- Umm – can’t think of anything more just now – but read through the material here and on other sites that Google will throw up, and if you have specific questions just holler, the guys here are very friendly.
Cheers,
Shafique
