Need to know the truth about Dubai Oct 22, 2004
Hi,

Looking to possibly relocate to Dubai.

I am curious about the life in Dubai for a single attractive woman. I am not used Arab customs and unsure I will be able to feel comfortable.

Is it a small city, in comparison to average American cities?

My brother is currently relocating to Dubai, he is married and seperated from his wife. He is attractive and will be making alot of money. I am partly going to help him, but not sure if I should uproot my life for it. Does my sister in law need to worry? Is life that permiscuous there? I am afraid he is going to go crazy, as he will be comletely alone and very American.....

Is Dubai a place I really want to go? Is it scary being so close to Iraq?

Tons of questions and would appreciate honesty, no cracks.

Thanks!!!

in short its hell lot betta than america
u hv everythin here tht u hv in america and hell lot more
and if ur still in doubt y dont u chek it out urself for 15 days and den decide for urself

lol u guys love ur self dont you lol.
well if u think ur pretty in american come here land of the beautiful (if you know where to look)

and for the ones on a modest budget karama u get beautiful wanna be's

anyways. no worries the change shouldnt be a problems. the booze flows and night clubs stay up. keep in mind the age limit is slighty higher 21. as oppose to 18.

other americans here love it so its only about time before you join the craze.

ow yes it is very scary staying next to iraq i had to doge a bullet the other day.

we are so close to iraq the americans marched in here with there army and tanks thinking its iraq.
they stopped at shiek zaid road and said "buildings? i thought we blow them all up" "ow shit wrong coordinates AGAIN!?"

so my suggestion is learn where all the bom shelters are. pack a supply of food and porno. and invist in a dog they can smell a suicide bomber a mile away.

its called sarcasm. no its no prob iraq is a fair bit away.

what do you do students? or work?

Thanks for the tips!

I didn't mean to sound like an ignorant American, actually I am Canadian, but I am very worried about my brother.

As the male perspective - he's having a rough time, escaping from reality, and I actually think he is depressed. I am worried he is going to go crazy - so is Dubai the type of city you can get lost in, are women forward, will he be surprised by the difference in culture? Can he have peace there? Is the night life that inviting?

I am an accountant, and I am seriously considering the move, but have applied through agencies for work. Waiting on that.

So, more advice on this one please.

Well, I am in the same boat as your brother, well kinda. Moving to Dubai very soon and on some pretty good money. Single guy in a land of opportunity.

I am looking forward to exploring everything Dubai has to offer. I ain't young, but look younger than my age.

Shame I have no idea where eveything is in Dubai yet. I am defo looking forward to wandering the streets and seeing the sights and exploring the clubs and pubs!

I apologize for the sarcasm I didn’t realize it was on such a serious note.

U genuinely look concerned about your brother. Well I hope I can be of service.
I have lived in the states for a number of years in LA. And let me tell u the most noted of differences.

Firstly time seems to move much slower here. Not at all because it is boring but because it is more relaxed. It is not as stress full as the rush and buzz of the big cities of the states.
There are lots of open spaces and the country would seem roomer and more open.
Yet like all big cites rush hours are deadly.

When he first comes round he might think there isn’t much to do. But if you give the country a deeper look there isn’t much you couldn’t do. Here in the site we are more then happy to tell you where all the nice places and hangouts are.

Some advice from me:
Routine is what would put a man in depression breaking out of it and venturing into a new world should unshackle him for a while. But if he doesn’t build goals an initialize a motivation for life and success moving countries would make little a difference.

Life style here is also much cheaper in comparison. With the soring oil prices the emirates manages to keep a modest range due to the fact it is a oil producing country. Oil here is a quarter that of it in the states.

Commuting isn’t a problem tho taxis are readily available and would cost a average commute about $5 USD.

Settling in is easy and at least from this site no one is complaining about Dubai.

Thanks guys,

Your honesty has been really helpful. I am very worried about my bro - maybe I shouldn't be. Men need to learn on their own unfortunately, but depression is the whole reason I am most worried. His job is as stressful as it gets, so he won't escape that, but if life is slower and not too party, party, maybe he can clear his head and figure out what he really wants. He has walked away from everything good in his life, emotionless, and looking for escape. You can't escape depression, which he denies anyways.

As for the actual move, I am seriously considering it, and seeing what happens. I could use a change, but I am wondering about rents in Dubai. How much is it really, to rent a place there? When I convert it, it's insane, like 10G's a month, or is the rent based on a year? I can't figure it out. Can someone clarify for me? I have been looking online for rents. Also, how far is Abu Dhabi from Dubai? What's it like there?

Also, what tips can anyone give for finding work there. I have the usual headheanter stuff, classifieds, etc., but are there tips I could get that I just woudn't know unless I asked locals? As well, what is the dress really like? I am ultra feminine and no slutty is not me, but are sleevelss shirts, and shorter skirts, or a revealing neckline that bad? The truth please.....

Give me all you got, I could use it.......

i will answer this in a hurry and give you a more detailed answer later.

the advertised prices for rents are yearly not monthly.

heed my warning "DO NOT GO TO ABU DHABI" dont say i didnt tell you. for to many reason but just in case you still want to know its about 230km from dubai. 2 and a bit hour drive away.

if you are seriously about moving then you should read are advice in other posts.

come here for holiday its a great holiday destination. but while you are here look around find jobs ask for rent do it all one go. a few ppl who asked me from this site i have gone as far as give my personal number. so if you need asistance some ppl are willing to help.

about the dress code. its free u wear what you want or like. the shortest of skirts and a tube top is fine. if u come here for a week you will get a sence of the dress code.

as for rent i think u will be looking at 10's USD a year for one bedroom in a good location.
i might be off but it will be less not more.

lol i intended for this to be short...

Rents: Yes, about US$10K per year is a pretty good apartment, from what I understand, but u may have to buy a car to be able to get around, Please correct me if I am wrong, but for that sorta cash, you will be living outside of Dubai central areas.

When I was in Dubai for me interview, I saw all sorts of fashion, some nice, some not so nice, but it defo is a very liberal place in terms of that. Lots of shops on offer and seem to have everything and a lot of foodstuffs that are from the UK (massive chocolate selection!).

Jobs: I got mine through a UK recruitment consultant. You may want to try and source one from the US consultant, that way, u will get a job on an expat package (flights etc thrown in).

I fly over in a weeks time. I just can't wait to get me hands on the wheels of some of these "yank tanks" to take them for a test drive!

Ola,

Okay Fakespike, what's the deal with Abu Dhabi? I am extremely curious!!!! You must tell me. See, my Bro may be transferred to Abu Dhabi, and isn't quite sure yet. Please give me more info...........

As for the rents, thanks. I may try a holiday in December, not sure yet, but I am thinking about it. Good to know the clothing isn't so bad, and actually I got freaked from other posts and the restrictions they talked about. So I am not sure what the truth is - I have to see it to believe it, I guess.

Rents are cheaper than I thought, so that is okay. I am looking for the expat package so I'll keep all that has been said in mind.

I was promised a lengthier response to my personal situation with my Bro, FS, so any male perspective would help. You're very honest - thank you.......my family is everything to me.

Take care and talk soon!

Is it "dry" there. i.e. No BOOZE? Where are the "dry" areas in Dubai, if any at all, incl residential areas.

It's also a long way away from Dubai, in terms of driving distance!

Whatever you get from this post you will never get the full picture until your here.

My suggestions:

1. If you really thinkin about living here, might as well spend a little money and at least come down here for a few nights cause seeing is beleiving.

2. If you actually spend the time to search through this site using the "Search" button way up at the top you'll find alot of people have the same questions about living here so you really don't have to repeat yourself.

3. At the end of the day everybody is different. What one person may think could be totally opposite or exactly like the way you do. Don't take anything for granted but keep an open mind to what everyone is saying. Refer back to point 1.

My two cents, take it or leave it.

Cheers,

Okay guys,

Thanks for all the tips and yes, I have tried to search the other topics, but it's never as informative as I hope for.

I am as far from Dubai as it gets, so I'll wait for the interview process to see it, and that should be soon.

I'll keep in mind all the generous offers to show me what Dubai is all about!!!!

Thanks again!

Well bella,

Like me, u will look like a lost pea in a pod! But thats the best way to see the place. Get lost and wander. You will never get to know the place in a week, but first impressiuons count, and I was fairly impressed, even though I was stuck (so it seems) miles from anywhere!
