Paternity & Maternity Aug 19, 2011
Nothing special here, just wanted to share this pic of myself with my beloved 6 months old nephew, Omar.
I love him so muchhhh and his twin sister Mira, it feels special to be an uncle ;)

They spend half the week at our home, and the other half at their maternal grandparents.
I miss them so badly everytime they leave home! I wonder how it feels to be a father.

No wonder our parents are always acting very protective towards us! Only shows how madly they love us.

Those of you who got children, please share with us your experience of when you first became a father/mother.

Re: Paternity & Maternity Aug 20, 2011
I can remember the day my daughter was born like it was yesterday....and it was nearly 17 years ago now.

My partner had to be induced, as my daughter was 2 weeks late, and so we went to the hospital knowing that "today is the day" for definite.

I watched the whole thing, and tried to be as suppoortive as i could (but it's not easy when the mother is in a bit of pain and you can do nothing!!). I cut the umbilical cord when my daughter was finally out, and i think the midwife had a bit of a joke, as she clamped the cord and handed me the scissors to cut it. It was under so much pressure that the blood sprayed out all over the place, all over my face, and hit the ceiling. The idea was for it to be symbolic - giving her independent life after the 9 months being "part "of her mother.

But i will never forget holding her in my arms for the first time, saying hello, and telling her "I'm your Daddy".

I dont think there is a better experience than becoming a father, Sym, and i hope you can experience that same feeling someday soon.

Wow -Thats an interesting experience BlueOrb! The part of when you first held her was really touching :)

Only women knows the pain of pregnancy. I feel sorry for the elder generations, back in their time, specially the poor ones, they didn't have good medication and some women/babies would die :(
Both my grandmothers never saw their mothers, because they passed away while delivering them.

Once a colleague at work told me that, once you become a father, you'll only think of one thing in life, and that is to support your kids, and provide them with the best you can to make them happy.

Indeed, children are a gift from God.

Thanks for sharing Blue, and I hope I experience that someday inshallah ;)

My first kid is, although not raised as such, jewish. The kind the OP wants to send back to the gas chambers. So what I see is just a monster in the OP, even more so with a child in its arms.

Anyways, as a farther, the first year - year and a half was not for me. Of course you love them and nurture them, but the real fun starts when they start to talk and you can play together and so on. Before that the baby just cries, poops and eats.

The second one was born and couldn´t breath and was placed immediately in the emergency room. The nurse couldn´t open the oxygen supply. It took her 10 seconds. Longest seconds in my life. Thought I lost it. Everything turned out fine with no damage. When something happens like that, you even more consider every moment with the kid as a gift.

Unfortunately women still die today in childbirth, especially in the Third World (e.g. Africa). While there is an absence of proper medical care, i think that will always be the case.

I think your colleague is right - certainly, for me, my whole life focus changed, although having a baby never interupted my life, only made me have to think about things a bit more, and adapt what i did and where we went to account for having another little person to consider.

I think having a child changes things, but mostly for the better! :-)

Ever since we got Omar & Mira at home, my parents attitude changed a lot as they became grandparents.

We got a local saying "Nothing is more precious than your son, but your grandson".
To me its so hard to buy this saying, its just hard to imagine, but I can see my mom really attached to the kids so madly, that her blood sugar increased several times just because she misses them a lot when they leave home.

My only concern about children, is that it'll be hard to travel while having 2 or 3 of them to control
How did you manage that?

I only have one child, and so it was easy to take her with us wherever we went in the first couple of years.

Plus, i split with her mother when she was between three and four, and so after that it was weekends and the occasional week that i personally had her.

That meant that each period together was even more special, and through the years we did some great things, that were a shared experience between just me and her, which in hindsight is nice. I made a point of doing things that she didn't do with her mother, which i think she appreciated. She's turned out great, and I'm very proud of her - an intelligent and well rounded young lady, with an interest in motorsport! :-))

Credit for her turning out well rounded goes to both parents who were sensible enough to realize that they divorced each other, not their child.

Glad you feel proud of her, and I hope she would take care of you in the future, a payback for your efforts in raising her ;) May God bless both of you, and hope you live long enough to walk her up the aisle on her wedding day to give her your blessings, and play with her children ;)

Nice sentiments, Sym. Thank you for your kind words.

Of course, she won't be getting married, because no man/boy will ever be good enough for my girl! :-)
