I haven't read your link ben as I'm pushed for time. I have to disagree, granted. there are some kids who are dragged up but not all. Beth has some great friends, they are all well behaved when they come round here, save for throwing a few peas around that is. They have a drink, in moderation, but don't get drunk and never fight. Their morals seem to be in tact.

They all file out in the morning saying thanks for having me etc.

Joanna Lumley is wrong about children today Mar 02, 2011
Joanna Lumley is wrong about children today

Joanna Lumley may be famed for her ageless beauty, but with her latest comments the 64-year-old has fallen into the most ageing trap of all: the myth of 'in my day'.

In an interview in this week's Radio Times, she launches an Enid Blyton-esque manifesto for childhood, leaving parents to wonder who spiked Joanna's ginger beer?

I wonder why this is?

She lamented the decline in Britain's educational standards over recent decades. Speaking to the Radio Times, Lumley said: "We have taken our foot off the education pedal, and I don't think it makes anyone happy.

"We don't respect education. Not at all. Not like in Africa or China, where it is hugely respected."

I strongly disagree that quality of British education has dropped a lot for a few last decades. We can see OxBridge in every single chart. So there is nothing to worry about. Moreover, last year UK was granted Nobel Prize in Physics, the first one after 50 years break. Bravo Andrey Konstantinivich Geim from Sochi and Konstantin Sergeevich Novoselov from Nizhny Tagil!

I was waiting for this comment.

Some fine English names there - the English university is so proud that they won a Nobel Prize for England. ;)

As for Lumley - she speaks utmost sense, and so eloquently too.

She has a history of speaking sense - this is the great Joanna in action humbling a government minister on the subject of Nepalese Gurka soldiers - a 'classic' performance, you may say - just observe the body language!! ;) :

Shafique, to be expected, not a good word to say about the British, yet he claims to be one! More anti-white sentiments.

I don't have a problem with Joanna Lumley, but she is outdated in her views about kids in the UK.

BTW BM, In no way was this directed at you. Beth in particular sounds like a very mature and responsible lady.

I would be interested to hear the views of people on expat children when compared to their mother country counterparts.

I have a friend who lives in Dubai with her husband and 11 year old daughter. She's a lovely girl and is no different to a lot of the kids in the UK. She obviously is very lucky and has a great life, nice villa, lovely weather, nice school and her parents appear to have plenty of money. Both parents work and there is a live in nanny but they also spend a lot of time with their daughter. One thing they have in common with me is that they have older children.
I'm not a particular fan of kids really, I'm a big believer in kids should know their place. I can't be doing with cheeky kids, if any of my kids swore at me I'd drop them.
If you don't keep your kids in order, expect them to be brats. They need boundries and they need to know when they've over stepped them.
Child rearing really isn't rocket science, IMO.

Sounds like an outdated view of kids BM, not that there is anything wrong with that.

What's outdated about kids showing their parents some respect ben? Or is it the bit where I wouldn't put up with being sworn at? I'm afraid I may a bit old fashioned in my views of rearing children. I do admit I'm not very maternal.

You don't see a lot of it these days... respect that is.

Every child is an individual. It's the responsibility of the parent(s) to the child(ren) right from wrong, manners, responsibility, values, morals, etc., that will form the person they become when they reach adulthood. You certainly don't have to send them out with a piece of bread and tend to the livestock to learn values.
