BRAVO to Dr Richard Reyes Jan 27, 2011
I know this should go in the Health forum but I want it to reach as many people as possible.

I heard about this on the radio about an hour ago. Recently I read where Shiekh Mo put together a team to establish a Cancer Center in Dubai. I also understand that American Hospital will be opening a radiation clinic so that women don't have to travel to Al Ain for treatment. This is long overdue, but better late than never.

Dr Richard Reyes is affiliated with City Hospital and established a website which reaches 22 Arab countries on breast cancer.

Announcement from City Hospital:

http://www.ehl.ae/TheCityHospital/NewsD ... newsid=274

The website:

http://www.breastcancerarabia.com/funnel_events/5227

Thank you Dr Reyes!!!!

The site has clinics, hospitals listed as well as doctors for members of the site. Dr Reyes is responsible for setting it up.

There is a large number of western women in Dubai to keep the male physicians busy.

But the Arab mentality is changing through awareness programs and education to women and their families. I can't imagine how many women died from breast cancer here because there was a stigma attacked to it and it went untreated.

There is a local female doctor where most of the Arab women go to. I'm sure there are plans for more women doctors. Then you will have a choice as to who is going to handle your thruppenys.

It was very nice of the ruler to set up the cancer center in dxb.

OT -

.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer in women worldwide...
.
Of the twenty-three studies examined, twenty-one showed an increased risk of breast cancer with oral contraceptive use prior to a first pregnancy in pre-menopausal women. The combined results showed an over-all risk increase for breast cancer of 44 percent.
.
... that women must be warned of the potential risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer before they take oral contraceptives...
.
The study re-enforces the 2005 classification of oral contraception as a Type 1 carcinogen

Hopefully the young women will pay heed.

also from that article

.
Researchers have increasingly warned about an additional link between breast cancer and abortion, found to be significant in multiple studies throughout the world...The abortion/breast cancer link has been consistently ignored or denied, however, by leading cancer institutes in Europe and North America....

Fascinating.

Always excellent to have good cancer treatment facilities for the population.

zubber, there is no link between breast cancer and abortion - that was only propaganda from the pro-life camp. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/fact ... iscarriage (In case you are interested in women's reproductive issues - http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/)

Abortion and Breast Cancer Link - There is an ongoing debate over this issue, and a lack of anything conclusive
For eg: - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/artic ... ancer.html , This is the most recent study on this matter.

I went through that link about about myths of repro-health in women, interestingly enough lot of their links are to dated studies lacking actual mention of the authority that conducted to the study, more-over their arguments are based on news editorials.

Until such time that we can zap the breastcancer gene, we are stuck with it also Kanelli :)
And early detection is the is the best cure.
A government provided screening program is needed. Not sure if this is in place, but I have seen talk about it for years now.
I can't understand why the private hospitals don't already have this in place.

benwj, like I said, it is excellent to have cancer facilities for both men and women in Dubai.

No doubt many women have suffered with cancer in the Middle East because of poor facilities and poor awareness for women partially due to a stigma attached to medical treatment involving breasts or other female reproductive parts.

(Zubber, you can read the Daily Mail a British rag, and LifeNewsSite which is run by The Campaign Life Coalition - a pro-life group out of Canada for your info on how contraceptive pills and abortion cause breast cancer. I'll stick to the US National Cancer Institute which uses the knowledge and research of the hundreds of worldwide experts in the field of cancer.)

That article which i posted is only drawing attention to a NEW STUDY, that adds to the positive link which was previously hypothesized, the results of that study which indicates a strong link will be published soon, the information by the NCI will change over time

According to the Daily Mail article "While concluding that breastfeeding offered significant protection from cancer, they also noted that the highest reported risk factor in developing the disease was abortion."

So, I look for the research article and find the abstract - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20338838

How strange that the major conclusion is this, "Prolonged breastfeeding significantly reduces the risk of breast cancer and this protective effect was supported by a dose-response relationship. Risk due to passive smoking should be emphasized in anti-smoking programmes."

They mention passive smoking, but where is the mention of abortion being the highest risk factor... you'd think it would be in the abstract, no?

I was already poking around at other studies and found that the Sri Lanka one had only 303 participants, the Iran study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20364336) had 300 participants, and Chinese study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20193327) was a case-control study that had 200 pairs one with and one without cancer - these were all done with questionnaires and the Chinese also with genetic testing. All the studies had very small sample sizes and there are lots of confounding variables that are hard to control for with questionnaires! The study from China didn't say that abortion was the highest risk factor. It was looking at estrogen-biosynthesis gene morphisms and concluded "Multivariable unconditional logistic regression showed that after adjusting BMI, intake of estrogen, age of first birth, number of abortion and period of breast feeding, the interaction item of CYP17 (T1931C) and HSD17beta1 (A1954G) was strongly and positively correlated to breast cancer (OR = 2.52, 95%CI = 1.54 to 4.11)." Anyhow, you should definitely check this - scroll down to "Confounding factors" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_% ... hypothesis

And I just love the quote by Professor Jack Scarisbrick - chairman of Life (a pregnancy counseling charity in the UK) "We have encountered from the pro-abortion lobby manipulation of the evidence on a truly disgraceful scale. This study is further evidence that has been gathering from all around the world that abortion is a major risk factor for breast cancer."

This is fabulous coming from a representative of Life... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/1692144.stm

What you have is journalist with no critical thinking ability, writing crap to help sell newspapers.
