RIP Shah Jan 06, 2011
I meant to ask Melika about this yesterday.
Were many Iranians clinging onto hope of him returning to the throne one day?

One wonders what drove him kill himself.

Re: RIP Shah Jan 06, 2011
It's really sad how the Pahlavis ended with this tragedy :(
They loved Iran truely regardless everything, and the feeling of being in exile is totally depressing.

I'm not sad for him, as much as I'm sad for his parents the last Shah and Shah-banu of Iran.

Persia or Iran has always been ruled by monarchies in allll periods starting from the Medeans, Achaemenids, Parthians, Sassanians, Tahiris, Saffaris, Samanis, Ziyaris, Buyids, Gaznavis, Khawarezmis, etc. and on 1979 it all ended with the arrival of the Khomaini who destroyed this legacy of Persia with his dictatorship.

I dream to see monarchy revive again in Iran, as I only believe in it. I'm not sure if others believe in it, but surely those who originates from Shiraz such as myself believes in it with all means.

May Allah have mercy on the souls of all Iranian martyrs and may he support the victimized people to overthrow the current dictatorship of this extreme Shia regime that seriously do not resemble Iranians, Amen.

Majority of Iranians like Shah and his family, they might not be perfect, but comparing to what happened to Iran after them, they were quite blessing to Iran. But I don't think people were looking for them to come back to be the king, as the society is looking for democracy.

Even though they have some fans and supporters, but their hope was not this guy, but his older brother.

After they moved out from Iran and his father's death, he got severely depressed, and as they said he could not overcome that depression. His younger sister committed suicide couple of years ago too.

"BOSTON - The younger son of the late former Shah of Iran was found dead of an apparent suicide at his home in Boston on Tuesday, according to his elder brother Reza"

Thats the first paragraph from the news-link you posted. Do you actually read what you copy & paste??

^sym - I think you're being harsh, a genuine question was asked and I'm sure benjw will be embarrassed to find out he didn't register this fact that was in the quote.

On family level - this is a tragedy and my commisserations to the friends and family of the man. To be in so much mental pain to resort to suicide is very sad indeed.

Mel and I have different perspectives on the merits/achievements of the two Pahlavi shahs - especially the latter part of the last shah's rule when he became particularly despotic and turned the majority of the population against him and helped usher in a popular revolution (popular as in the majority supported it).

But taking a historical view of it - the Pahlavi 'dynasty' was only started by the Shah's father - and he came into power in a coup and declared himself a shah. He came from a relatively humble, military background - serving in a cossak brigade. (this is not to bring him down - many great leaders come from humble beginnings).

I'd rate other secular Iranian leaders as highly, or even higher, than the two shahs - and indeed, Iranians consistently consider the PM Mossadegh to be a greater leader in polls that are carried out.

Therefore I'd say that Iran's best hope for an alternative is a leader who is chosen for their leadership skills rather than a reinstatement of a very short-lived monarchy (in historical terms). This is just echoing what Mel wrote in the first reply - so I'm agreeing with her on this point. Whether Reza fits the bill - is another question.

But on the suicide of his younger brother - as I said - very sad and my heartfelt commisserations.

Cheers,
Shafique

Shaf, indeed Mossaddeq was way more loved by the population, for as far as I've understand from the background that I come from. However, a monarchy can exist while having a democratic parliament.

I think its a pity that the legacy of manarchies in Iran has ended in that way of 1979.

We'll put you as Shah-Banu (Queen) of Iran
I wonder how will the situation be if the whole country was runned by women and only women

Re: RIP Shah Jan 07, 2011
Mel - at least I resisted the temptation to state that the Shah's father was put into power by the Brits and Russians and then was forced to step down by the Brits so his more compliant 21 year old son could take over; and that Mossadegh was terminated by a CIA coup..... oops..;)

Just kidding - regardless of who/how the shah's got their power, the family tragedies are still sad. I also do recognise that the second (and last) Shah did have flashes of national pride and brilliance in the middle of his reign.

Cheers,
Shafique

Sorry sym, I didn't read that particualr article in detail. It was just what I had at hand at the time and I had already seen it in the news and the papers.
I don't want to get into details about how good or bad the shahs were, but Mel was right when she said that the grass isn't that greener after all and Shaf is right that the Brits and Americans are to blame
