Tolerance update: Christmas banned, World braces for riots Dec 22, 2010
In Modern, Moderate and Tolerant Indonesia:

Bogor authorities have banned all public activities or celebrations associated with Christmas, including Christmas Mass, at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Parung, Tulang Kuning, Bogor Regency (West Java Province). The official ban was issued in a letter that restated the usual reasons, namely the lack of a building permit for a place of worship (Izin Mendirikan Bangunan in Indonesian). Without it, even praying on Church-owned land is prohibited.

In Indonesia, permits are required for any type of building, but when it comes to Christian places of worship, they are issued only after 60 residents living near the would-be church have agreed in writing to the project and the local Inter-faith Dialogue Group has given its approval.

Of course, world leaders quickly condemned this overt display of Christianophobia, with even conservative clerics calling the ban on Christmas and the repressive laws in Indonesia as 'backward' and 'Christiano-phobic'.

For their part, the OIC has issued an official statement saying this "latest escalation by local authorities brings the world that much closer to chaos and anarchy" and has scheduled an emergency session with members to discuss what can be done to ease tensions between Muslims and Christians.

One OIC member, who asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said it was no surprise that Christians are turning to the radicals but went on to say that the vast majority of Christians adhere to the peaceful teachings of Christianity and that 'crusade' means to struggle for something good, not holy war.

Christians are planning protests around the world and, unfortunately, there have been calls for holy war from the Vatican and there was a particularly hateful demonstration in Brazil, where effigies of the Indonesian prime minister were burned and protesters called for the beheading of Indonesians and the supremacy of Christianity over Islam.

Then I woke up.

Bah humbug.

I thought this thread was about the Sheriff of Nottingham cancelling Christmas:

Extremists in Bogor, Indonesia have obviously not read the Quranic instructions that Muslims are to protect churches and not shut them down. Thankfully these guys are a minority in the most populous Muslim nation - but obviously, if you believe Jihadwatch and Fox News, then this is what you really, really want to believe Islam actually teaches.

The irony is that the guys shedding crocodile tears have argued that Muslims shouldn't build a community centre a few blocks from Ground Zero! Compare and contrast that with the non-hypocritical stance of denouncing both the anti-Muslim and anti-Christian bigots.

You're right about that, but that's because no such instruction exists.

I'd like to see your evidence for that claim. 58% of Indonesian Muslims oppose Christian churches being built near where they live and 27% of Muslims do not want non-Muslims educating their children.

The 58% figure is the clearest indication for where most Indonesians should stand on this issue - they oppose public displays of non-Muslim worship.

And as you should have read in the quoted portion of the OP, there are major restrictions Christians face in building houses of worship in Indonesia - for one, any church needs approval from the local residents before it can be built, but with 58% of the Muslim population against the building of churches, such approval is hard to come by.

:)

Eh you know what.....Thomas Jefferson was right when he said;
"The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do."

And Yeees there we have it.....
“Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth has been made clear from error.” [Surah al-Baqarah: 256]

You think you need more instructions to exist Eh?..
But hey you seem to like to read Tafsir and hadiths, so do you think you can enlighten us as to when and why such revelation had to arrive..

Forcing people in religion?

^Actually I was thinking more of 22:40 - but 2.256 is also relevant.

Indeed. There is no instruction in the Koran that says for Muslims to protect non-Muslim places of worship.

Far from it, in fact. The Koran actually commands Muslims to steal a Pagan house of worship (9:17-18).

So, a Jewish mayor bans Christmas trees in Nazareth because it would offend Jews.. and yet the fanbois are silent?

Christmas trees 'provocative:' Nazareth suburb's mayor
(AFP) – 3 days ago

NAZARETH ILLIT, Israel — The mayor of a Jewish suburb of Nazareth sparked outrage on Wednesday after refusing to allow Christmas trees to be placed in town squares, calling them provocative.

Predominantly Jewish Nazareth Illit, or Upper Nazareth, is adjacent to Nazareth, where Jesus is said to have spent much of his life. It has a sizable Arab Christian minority, as does mostly Muslim Nazareth itself.

"The request of the Arabs to put Christmas trees in the squares in the Arab quarter of Nazareth Illit is provocative," Mayor Shimon Gapso told AFP.

"Nazareth Illit is a Jewish city and it will not happen -- not this year and not next year, so long as I am a mayor," he said of the northern Israeli town.

"Nazareth is right next door and they can do what they want there," he said.
His decision angered the town's Arab and Christian minority, who accused him of racism.

"The racism of not putting a tree up is nothing compared to the real racism that we experience here," said Aziz Dahdal, a 35-year-old Christian resident of Nazareth Illit.

"When we asked the mayor to put up a Christmas tree in the Arab neighbourhoods of Nazareth Illit he said this is a Jewish town, not a mixed town," said Shukri Awawdeh, a Muslim Arab member of the town council.

Awawdeh said there were 10,000 Arabs, most of them Christian in the town and there was also a large community of Christian Russian immigrants.

"We told him that decorating a tree is just to share the happiness and cheer with other people in the town," said Awawdeh.

"People here, Jews, Christians and Muslims live in harmony, but when the mayor does something like that, it does not make things better."

Christmas festivities in the Holy Land focus on the West Bank town of Bethlehem, where Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus in a manger. But there are also events in Nazareth, where Jesus is believed to have grown up with his mother Mary and her husband Joseph.
