Israel: Indoctrination In Education

Israel: Indoctrination in Education Sep 01, 2010
Haaretz lifts the lid on another dirty little secret about the Israeli government - that it is guilty of what it accuses Palestinians of: Indoctrinating their children with propaganda and censorship.

The children were taught the truth about the discrimination (so Israeli schoolchildren would know the truth that some here deny blindly) - but this is now inconvenient and needs to erased from the pages of academia:
Now the school system's main civics textbook will also be modified, because it states that "since its establishment, the State of Israel has engaged in a policy of discrimination against its Arab citizens."

It would be interesting to read what the same book says the treatment of Arabs under Israeli occupation has
been like (the above is talking about Arab Israelis).

Anyway, here's the article in full:
Educating toward indoctrination
The minister's claims of liberalism are disingenuous; under his watch, the national curriculum is whitewashed.

Haaretz Editorial

The frequent changes the Education Ministry makes to school curricula share one common denominator. Each smells of the same kind of crass, shallow patriotism that glosses over any complicated issue, forcing students to swallow the same rote, sanitized version of the multifaceted, paradoxical Israeli story and silences all critical thought.

The history books have already been rewritten. The Palestinian perspective of the Nakba - which is apparently at odds with the sterile Israeli narrative offered by Dr. Zvi Zameret, chair of the ministry's Pedagogic Secretariat - has been censored, leaving only hollow praise for the state's establishment. The Oslo Accords have been erased, and Holocaust studies have been expanded to "strengthen Jewish identity," while any reference to the wider context of the rise of European fascism has been omitted.

Now the school system's main civics textbook will also be modified, because it states that "since its establishment, the State of Israel has engaged in a policy of discrimination against its Arab citizens." It seems Zameret and his staff do not understand the meaning of civics which, apart from imparting the basics of government and democracy, is meant to offer tools for understanding conflicts within society and nurturing critical thought among citizens.

But like the Institute for Zionist Strategies (where Zameret has been active ), the head of the ministry's pedagogic secretariat is trying to do away with 50 years of open, critical study of Zionism, the state's history and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Instead, students are given a patronizing version of the past, one that insults their intelligence and diminishes their ability to understand complex historical developments and identify with the society in which they live, despite its many problems.

Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar says he would never intervene in course curricula, but these changes conform snugly to his world view. Sa'ar presents himself as a liberal to whom freedom of expression is dear, but he remains convinced that students must be inculcated with "national values." In light of the indoctrination championed by his ministry, it seems he and his staff are less interested in promoting free expression than narrow-minded, isolationist nationalism.

Indoctrination means that people are not allowed to be critical about certain ideas. This does not apply to Israeli secular education. The mere fact that the article can be published without a problem proves this fact.

I thought indoctrination was not about forbidding people from being critical, but rather not giving them the information to be critical and making believe this version to be true. I.e. it is true that those who aren't indoctrinated will be critical.

Hence, re-writing the history books as is being proposed (and removing a truism) is what is being called indoctrination.

In fact, Haaretz is saying the ministry is championing the indoctrination:
In light of the indoctrination championed by his ministry, it seems he and his staff are less interested in promoting free expression than narrow-minded, isolationist nationalism.

The censorship of the information in schools is part of the process. The indoctrination means that when the truth is presented by Haaretz or Chomsky et al, it isn't believed. The fact that there are those critical of the Israeli official line shows that the indoctrination hasn't completely worked with everyone - but just look at the comments to the critical Haaretz articles and you will see that many have indeed been indoctrinated and refuse to accept the facts.

Bravo to the brave souls that are standing up to the increased efforts to indoctrinate/censor school books.

Here's wiki's definition:
Indoctrination is the process of inculcating ideas, attitudes, cognitive strategies or a professional methodology (see doctrine).[1] It is often distinguished from education by the fact that the indoctrinated person is expected not to question or critically examine the doctrine they have learned.[2] As such it is used pejoratively, often in the context of political opinions, theology or religious dogma.

Information in Israeli schools is not censored.

People claiming knowing THE TRUTH discourage any critizism.

The writers are completely wrong than that Israeli students are not expected to question. And they know it themselves.

Israel is both authoritarian tutelage and military dictatorship..
What the author describes in the article is typical education standard under dictatorship where patriotism and nationalism praised and ingrained in almost everything while of course everybody else neighbouring them declared as real enemies(which is fake of course)..All the ME nations have been through the same phenomena when they were created as new nations with new borders under the custody of colonising nations..
This was ofcourse needed for the protection of the newly established country for its borders to say as was defined..

That's probably what those who are indoctrinated are using to try and convince others that the Israeli spin is true.

Indoctrination does not mean not having access to information.

But hey, perhaps you are right and Haaretz is wrong - we just have to decide which story to believe.

It's a complete non-story, defended by those who claim to know THE TRUTH ( ).

As I said, it's a choice between Haaretz and the one claiming to know better.

Didn't you know that anything spoken or written against israeli policies and actions considered and treated as bad propaganda therefore shouldn't be allowed and banned at all times..

It's a complete non-story, defended by those who claim to know THE TRUTH

Did you also know that israel needs to keep some of these to entertain the rest of the world?..
Why?
Well some poeple still has to think that israel hasn't gone insane and is still a democracy..Hell...

How about that? are you satisfied now?..

Obviously you have missed that the thread is about an article from Haaretz. Actually most threads opened lately very critical about Israel and the current government are from Haaretz. Haaretz is a newspaper from Israel. I will not be surprised that even Haaretz doesn't realize that their own existence and articles prove that Israel is on so much higher moral grounds than the rest of the region. On the other hand I understand there are tribes of peoples that are not appreciative of freedom of speech.

That's a new one. Israel has FoS in order to fool the world that it is actually a dictatorship that doesn't allow FoS and indoctrinates their young. I seriously have to think that one through.

Your argument is with Haaretz.

Are you sure YOU haven't been indoctrinated?
