England captain has called for them found guilty of match fixing to be banned from cricket for life.

English police swooped on the team over match fixing allegations which have plunged the game into crisis and disgrace.

with Pakistan quickly losing and being booed off by their own supporters.

Not being a big cricket fan (I just about know the rules of test cricket, but don't ask me about the names of the positions or what a googly is) or a gambling fan - someone explain to me how bowling a few no-balls at specific times can help gamblers?

Can people bet that a no-ball will be bowled at a specific over? What's the point of that??

BTW - I've only just seen the headlines - something about getting 150k GBP to throw a few no-balls. Pretty big carrot there - but what I don't understand is why cricketers are viewed as more moral than other sportsmen? Surely they're all as bad as each other??

Cheers,
Shafique

The expose was initiated by a tabloid, so I guess for them the least intrusive exercise would be to have the captain deliver a few no-balls at pre-ordained times. The tabloid would'nt want to be held responsible for something major like fixing a match or sometin. The point is if they wanted they could've asked for anything. What they probably wanted to prove was that match-fixing is rampant in the PCB and that there is indeed a nexus between bookies and players.

The issue is not about morality. It's about the rules! One can't break the rules and fix the outcome of matches...that's Illegal and kills the spirit of the game.

Forget bout no-balls it's illegal for players to even give a pitch report to journalists once the match has begun.

The bigger issue is that this is not sometin confined to a few players. The rot in the PCB goes deep. And this is a known fact but has repeatedly been ignored. So long as cricket remains a regional game with India meddling and bullying the other countries, cricket will never truly ever be a gentleman's game again. They say it was once upon a time. I would'nt know!!!

Thanks - that clarifies the issue of the no-balls.

When they say Cricket was a gentleman's game - the little history that I do know about it is the distinction between 'gentlemen' and 'players' (historically):
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/artic ... 79,00.html

I get the bit that fixing the match is illegal and unsportsmanlike etc - I just don't get the point that cricketers will be any different from all other sportsmen (pretty much every sports has its scandals, from dodgy throw ins in football matches to horse doping).

But hey - at least I'm a bit more enlightened about the fixing now. Did the guy get to keep the 150k?

It was the fixer who got the 150k and he was arrested and released on bail. If found guilty he will have the money confiscated under the proceeds of crime Act in the UK. Until then he won't be able to spend it. The bowler was only paid 5k, allegedly, probably big money to a Pakistani cricketer who isn't paid a vast amount, by all accounts. I don't see how they can be found not guilty as the act is on tape and the no balls happened as promised, but stranger things have happened.
The cricketers involved should receive a life ban and this may act as a deterent in the future. Meanwhile the ICC is reviewing 82 previous matches that the Pakistanis have been involved in.
What makes it all the more shocking to cricket fans in the UK is that it happened at the home of cricket.

RB lives up to his moniker and proves a point:

"Better to keep your mouth shut and let everyone think you are a fool...than to open it and confirm their suspicions!"

Not my game sunshine.
I have played many times but can now find better ways to occupy my time as the pace can be a little slow.

My reference is to the inane stupidity of your content; the sport you have chosen to lambaste is irrelevant.

You can pick on virtually any activity and find points of derision. The point is why would you want to?

You highlight football as being a more exciting alternative to cricket. I would disagree, having watched some of the prima donnas of the sport attempt their chosen highly paid profession during the recent World Cup. I would classify that as watching paint dry personally.

I don't care if you like to spend your leisure time participating in thrilling sporting activities such as Bog Snorkelling, Octopush or even Championship TiddlyWinks, your personal observations on the game of cricket are of no interest to anyone else. So why waste bandwidth and bytes ranting about it?

You are out! Back to the pavilion.

Don't like:
Cricket
Football
Rugby League
Horse Racing
Golf
Bowling
Darts
Snooker
Baseball
Badminton
Tennis
Curling
Track sports
Marathons
and many other boring sports

I do like the sports I participate in and they tend to have a very, very high adrenaline content.

Hey Shafique check this out, apparently a no ball can make a huge difference,

'Dawood suffered Rs 50 crore loss due to third no-ball' (around 12 mill USD)

sometimes i wonder what the media is on about most of the time :D

so mcl, can you please ask timesofindia where dawood uncle ji is hiding because they certainly do know how much money it cost him 8)

p.s i would have believed what timesofindia and notw had to say if they had reported this BEFORE the match. ANY tom dicky and harry sitting in a pub can come up with a story AFTER the match not before the match ;)

Well he can't be all that hidden now can he? More-so when you take into account the fact that his kid married Pakistani great Javed Miandad's kid.
All said and done, the guy is huge. And huge businesses like this can't be entirely concealed. I guess the reason for reporting this post the match was owing to the huge losses incurred. I'm presuming with such huge bets they normally hedge the risk. But in this case since they were confident of the outcome, they probably did'nt hedge causing huge losses. As I said earlier such huge transactions cannot be concealed.
Generally Times of India do report such deals when they go sour. As they did when Pakistan played England I think. The overwhelming favorites were Pakistan but when England pulled of the upset series win, again all bets placed went awry, causing Indian bookies to suffer huge losses. That piece of info was reported in the media.

PS dude the argument itself is quite foolish. If they new that they would incur losses would they bet? Ad how on earth would any media publish this info before the match? :blackeye: :blackeye:

and what about reporting the no ball bets before the actual match?

if NOTW had posted their video of the brit paki saying that these balls will be no-ball balled by this baller BEFORE the match than yes.

All I am saying is how timesofindia was able to figure out dawood uncle lost so much money? Where do they get this information from?? They had a look at his account :S where do they get SUCH information from???

Dont you think the INDIAN authorities should be asking TOI where dawood is hiding since they know for sure how much he lost ;)
