Arab woman chalks up $50,000 in traffic fines

In Q1 2010 278,946 violations were recorded, compared to 251,336 violations during the same period last year.An Arab woman who owes a total of AED186,000 ($50,640) in fines has topped the list of traffic offenders in Dubai, according to the General Directorate of Traffic.

More than 11,000 drivers owe Dubai Police a combined total of AED100m ($27m), the Directorate said, adding that offenders who owed more than AED10,000 ($2,720) would have their vehicle impounded or licence withdrawn.

Police said that the woman, whose nationality was not disclosed, had amassed the fines over a number of years, before cancelling her residence visa and leaving without paying the balance.

Two people in the emirate owe AED127,000 ($34,575), while a fourth individual owes just over AED117,000 ($31,850), the Directorate said.

The director general of the Department of Traffic Engineering, Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, said that some of his team was working undercover to catch fine dodgers. He added that the department was also offering offenders the opportunity to pay their fines in installments, so as not to have their vehicles confiscated.
