Moreover, this whole issue was not worth all this fuss. So what if a couple kissed? Personally, I couldn't careless really!
As with respect to the law, I support it, but also the authorities should be flexable with the location & duration! It's a restaurant, not a big open shopping mall with kids all around, moreover it was 2 AM, I don't expect much families with their kids to be around either.

There was no need for all this exaggeration, it surely had a negative effect on Dubai's image as an international city. Yes, I support our local laws, but in a reasonable way.

Double standards exist everywhere by the way, and not just Dubai.

The first UK reports on the story said the Emirati lady also claimed that she, herself, saw the couple kissing on the mouth, and putting their hands underneath each other’s clothes?????

The GN report below went even further and said that other customers who were at the restaurant also confirmed the lady’s claim. So, according to all these reports, it wasn’t just the kid’s statement!!!????

Your post is misleading tom jones.......
You imply that GN has some confirming report, but if you read the article again you will see that it is the Emirati baby who said that other customers confirmed her claims, NOT some other sources. Nevertheless, no witness (es) for the accusation showed up in court.
As a woman I can only think of the frustration endured by Emirati women when they see expatriate couples showing some romance, because Emirati women are never to get romanced, seduced, or be the object of courtship.

Exactly ,it is just a show and ones they get home drunk, the abuse starts LOOL … never mind the laws of the country, but when children are present adults should watch their behavior, it is a common sense !! that’s why parents shot their doors when doing the love making and that’s why movies are rated daaaa …. Not everyone is happy their kids being exposed to pornography hon ..

You have a point Getrude. However, I also remember reading in one of the local papers (I can’t remember which one) that the police had questioned other witnesses in the restaurant who confirmed the Emirati lady’s account. I would imagine that the police would do something like that esp. when the British man involved spoke also Arabic. I’m sure he would’ve demanded the police to question the other customers sitting near his table to tell the police exactly what happened..

Whatever, I certainly think that the police did overreact in this case. They could’ve just let the couple go with a warning or, at worst, with paying a reasonable monetary fine. This is not really a crime but, rather, a harmless misconduct.

The laws here are clear and it is only ” a laughing stock “ as you put it not in the international media more than it is a UK press, do you know why ? bcz as I can see it is mostly the brits who are the ones breaking those laws which is not a surprise to me really …. Every time I was in Thailand and in the police station paying my bike fine ,guess who are the most hand caught for breaking the laws … yes you guessed it, the brits. Even though every thing over there is allowed but they just can manage to find a way to break the rolls… I don’t know why they act like this but they just do … the laws here are knowing to every one… cant you see that most of the population does not get in to the same problems as those fox ???

What I don’t get is that I have lived in the US for some times and I have never seen the Americans act this way, not even in night clubs where everything goes nor in restaurants and they are actually against those behaviors in public places like restaurants ,malls or any tourist attraction.

I tend to agree with you, the laws aren't very clear sometimes, I experienced living (apart. sharing) among some westerns and mainly Scandanavians, here in Dubai itself and I can understand how unclear it can be to some extent.

As for the kids, they should be ASLEEP!
Perhaps we need extra laws for kids

Yeah, curfew for kids!
Any kids found outside the house after 7pm will be summarily arrested, thrown in the back of a van in handcuffs and incarcerated in a non airconditioned cell for the next 30 days in the company of a strange bearded man who keeps drooling and scratching himself...

I blame the parents, but then I was not a witness so my word counts LOTS!

yes chocs children shouldnt be. but its up to the mum and dad not to me nor you. When you have your own kids, you can dress them up as telly tubbies or daffy duck but no1 will ask you why because they are your kids and you know whats best for them.

we dont know why they were up, there could be many reasons. Maybe they just flew in from UK and their dad decided to take them for dinner before taking them home!!

dont jump to conclusions before looking at it from different prespectives.

If the judges had a grain of logic in their minds, they would consider a verdict that is based on the circumstances that made the kid see such behavior. Any sane judge would tell a mother that kids should be in bed at that time and that the mother should get a life for bringing this to court.

I'd give both parties a warning for intolerance. Thats it.

whereever you go let it be UK, USA or Hungary they all have laws. Laws like gays and homosexual marrying each other, or a old guy living in Texas marrying a cow might seem ok to you but it wont seem ok to me.
Similiarly UAE/Middle East do have some laws which dont make sense to you but do make sense to me!
UAE/Middle East is changing slowly & slowly and gradually you will realize why such laws are there.

In case of a murder, I (as a judge) would want to know what level of development the kid has before making my judgement based solely on a kid's observation. I need to do a few psychological tests on that little fella and see how much he can be trusted to determine the sentence on the basis of a witness account of a e.g. 5 year old kid.

That is because religion rules daily life in your end of the world. Its normal that children are protected from such images, but mature people can decide for themselves in my world.

But stick to the subject. We're talking about a little kiss at 02:00AM witnessed by a kid !!! Be reasonable and think like a grown up. Its too silly and backward to even talk about, let alone rule a court over these circumstances.

RB, seriously most parents in this part of the world haven't got a clue what's right for their children! That's why they let them run around the inside of cars without a seatbelt, then wonder why their head gets smashed to bits as they go flying through the windscreen in an accident.

Any other court in the world would not take evidence from a 2 year old - it would be thrown out! And for the mother to not even show up to court or answer her phone to be called to court is ridiculous.

It's utterly stupid. Time should not be wasted on insignificant issues like this.

Sorry, but you can't rely on the witness statement of a 2 year old in any country. And why didn't the mother turn up in court? Probably because she realises she would be made a fool of by even the most incompetent legal council and real truth would come out in the open. Unfortunately the UAE legal system does not work on impartiality, but on the simple premise that the party bringing the complaint first is automatically the winner.

If I see someone scratching his *rse in the street, I can take a police complaint against him for no reason other than spite and he would be instantly arrested and taken to court. No defence, no witness statements from his side. Probably a 1000Dhs fine and a 3 month suspended sentence.

So if you have an itch...beware, I may be watching!!

The law actually states that for PDA's it's a fine and a caution. Only for 'severe breaches' is a jail term and deportation sought.

So basically the entire case is BS!

I actually met this girl once, some time ago before this incident. When it happened she approached my best friend who is a lawyer for some legal advice. My friend told me that apparently Emirati woman was asked to swear in Quran to say that its the truth what she has witnessed but she denied doing that.
I think they went with this information also to the court but judge dismissed them.

Are you saying that I can report all those men who have the need to publicly and constantly make genital adjustments to the police?!?!?! Oh, lordy, if that was the case I can help Dubai get out of debt in no time with all the fines that could be issued!!!! Could be done is no time if all the women who are subjected to these visual displays of adjustments reported such activity to the police.

If all those that were fined claimed that their undies were 2 sizes too small, hence the constant need to adjust, then the government should make it mandatory that men wear underwear that fit properly.
