This prob sounds odd - but because of the segregation - i'm more wary of being a victim of gay rape here than in the west, because of the segregation and intolerance of homosexuality.

:| Let me get this straight. Gay rape? That is what keeps you up at night? In Dubai??? Or in Cairo or wherever you meant?!?!?! More prevalent than the west?!?!?! Because of the segregation and intolerance of homosexuality due to this being a Muslim country?? Are you people kidding me?!?!?!?! How long have you been here man!?!?!

obv it doesn't keep me up all night lol! And the chances of it are very small but I believe its more than the west.

i been around africa asia, couple yrs in middle east now, my observations and reports of crimes in newspapers have formed this belief.

Gay rape isn't always about homosexuality - it can be about power, and some men if they are not allowed to have love will resort to desperate measures. Just look at prisons, where men can be temporarily 'gay'

I genuinely doubt that gay rape is more prevalent here and by here I mean Dubai because I don't know exactly what other places you are referring to. Given your concerns, I take it you have no plans to join a monastery soon?

Einstein, Of course you know english very well, but FYI:

I believe I used the term 'shouting match' first here - and would point out that another characteristic is that the parties aren't listening to each other.

The equivalent here would be not reading and responding to salient points made.

(But to be honest, part of me just wants your reaction to the analogy dee used about a certain state of dress in Paris :) )

The fact that you said "Shouting match" first, does not give you the right to make a meaning for it! The meaning I brought was from dictionary.

If I dont want to answer to some invlaid points, nothing can make me to read bunch of red insults! I had answered before what was concerned to me.

About the Paris dress, I have no idea, it may be in a red part!

When your friends learned to write in a proper manner, with a proper font, and not much question marks, I may answer them.

Ok, sorry - I thought I would clarify why I used the words shouting match, so that at least there would be no confusion over my intention.

I understand that dee's questions and points to you weren't easy to read. This is a fair point.I also take on board the colour font may be viewed as aggressive (I've been married a long time, and know not to question a lady's logic! ;)

So, let me help out here and re-format and put into paragraphs what Dee said - as I said, his arguments were well made and it seems a shame that his choice of font colour should obscure what could be an interesting discussion.

Melika wrote:
But for me, all other factors that u stated in Islamic countries, are results of religion and in particular Islam. So I see the root and origin of all those other factors brings harassment because of stupid Islamic rules, which interferes in every little details of life. And yes I know, other religions may have their own stupid rules, but it is just in Islamic countries where country laws are the same as religion rules.

Dee replied:
Ahhhhhh. I see. Now I finally understand why you post in the manner that you do. It seems that you simply type what you FEEL is correct. That above paragraph you wrote encompassed everything wrong with this thread.

This discussion was difficult enough when trying to correlate religion to harassment. All what has been going back and forth (well mostly forth) has been an analysis of two factors.

Now you have written 4 lines which are optimistic enough to claim that the factors I mentioned are all down to Islam.

The factors that I mentioned included (if my memory serves me right) illiteracy, poor education, lack of healthcare, political corruption, low income levels, general poverty, pollution....blah blah.

No offense intended but how exactly are you planning to prove to me that all those factors have been caused by Islam or religion in general? I am really looking forward to reading this.

I am not challenging you to anything but I think that it is my right to get some sort of validation for your opinions. I cannot simply say the earth is triangular and expect you to believe me. You asked me for a proper explanation and now I want one for you.

Hopefully one that is not simply "I saw, I heard, I believe).

I am prepared to listen to your rationale once you have one.

You seem to genuinely disturbed by people who "have faith" without being able to demonstrate understanding. Please explain to me how that is different from what you have just done? You seem to "have faith" that religion is the cause of factors that may or may not be related to it (similar to how there may or may not be a God). Yet you give no demonstration of understanding.

Please do not give me assumptions. Give me anything evidence-based (not copy-pasted) that properly addresses the 4 lines you have typed above and I will readily admit that I am wrong and that I have been typing nonsense.

I am not asking you for statistics and numbers. I am simply wondering if you have a thought process regarding this or if you just WANT to have this opinion.

I have answered your questions in a manner that I believe was moderately adequate. Now, I am asking you to reciprocate.

I want proper reasons for the ambitious claims you have typed in the above paragraph.

Don't take this in a rude way but I cannot continue to have a debate with your emotions any longer because we will never reach a result.

Melika also wrote:
Islam has rules for the way you eat, you dress, you talk, the way you walk, the way you take a shower, the way you buy, the way you sell, the way you date…
Believing in faith, praying so God will help you so no need to try, being hypocrite about your prayers, bashing others, restrictions on dress code and normal relationships which results in s.exual problems… yeah I know you are gonna say this is not Islam, but this is what is practicing as Islam today, and like Shaf you can not develop and promote your own version!

Dee:
This is truly too much. Can you think about the validity of what you type before you unleash it on us? When did I develop or promote anything? I am not preaching to you about my religion! I was simply stating the problems I had with your logic in relating two factors I felt were not directly relevant.

That is "promoting my own version" of my religion?!

I have not said a word about my religion or beliefs in this discussion. I did not mention Islam's views on harassment. I did not quote anything religious. In fact, I tried to lay-out as secular a rationale as I possibly could.

If I had never heard of Islam, I could have made the same exact points! What the hell do you mean praying to God so "you" don't need to try?!?!?!

How about you and I (a Muslim) compare the hardships that we have each had in our lives and I will leave you to judge who has tried harder!! Who told you that we are hypocrites in our prayers or otherwise? I might be. Shaf might be. But how would you know that?! Do you know us??

Do you for once have anything tangible to provide as evidence other than what you feel is true??

Do you not have restrictions on your own dress code? Would you walk around Paris crotchless? If not, why?

Are you a hypocrite who creates restrictions that result in sexual problems?!?!?!
Are there not restrictions on dress code in every bloody country on earth?
Are you actually saying that your actual problem is with the DEGREE of restriction?

That is hugely subjective and will obviously differ from person to person and place to place. There are Nudist Churches that are readily accepted in some countries. That is an example of absolutely no restrictions. Go to church naked. If you have a problem with that or think it is strange I am sorry to tell you this but, you are creating sexual problems.

Again, jokes aside, offer some support to your opinions.

Yes, we want to hear what you think.

However, when you approach a contentious topic with potential for debate you should have something more than telling us opinions formed during god-knows what experience you have had with Muslim(s).

Bear in mind that we are not those people that when forming your opinions you felt were "hypocrites" or did not "try".

Try not to generalize. There are crap people everywhere and unfortunately that is life. It is just more obvious when it comes from a culture or a background you cannot personally relate to.

There - more readable, I think you'll agree.

Any person with common sense would know that that is not the definition that was meant with referral to this forum. As Shafique has clarified, that is indeed true.

^^^Despite of your broad knowledge of everything, you don't really know what insult means, do u?

In your red post, which was very looooong, you had two points that actually you could write it in one paragraph, one, How did I conclude that all other disasters are from Islam? two, Why did I generalize you and shaf as people who develop their own version, and they are hypocrite?

To answer your first question, I had stated before, Islam interferes with the way you should spend your money, with rules about "Zakaat", "Khoms", "Fetryaah", interfere with how you should invest, interferes with your way of eating, halal and haram, fasting,.. Islam interferes the way you have to dress, the way you have to walk, the way that you have to do business etc etc. I can bring quotes of Quran for this all, but as I guess you know them I want make my post long with it. This interference will result in imbalance, very simple! If you can't get it I can't help you more. In my opinion everything should have their own way to reach to the stable situation. Forcing with external powers like Islamic rules just result in worse situation. that's why now you see almost all Islamic countries suffers from problems including harassment,war,poverty,...

Your second question, yes I was making assumptions about you, that you are going to say this is not Islam and Islam's teaching is different etc etc. My apologies IF YOU ARE GOING TO SAY ANYTHING ELSE.

P.S. I m not in this forum for religious debates really, So if I didnt come back to answer you it is not because "IT S NOT IN MY ADVANTAGE", it is because I am bored of you!

You seem to either misunderstand something or are imagining it. Not once in this thread did I talk about Islam or its teachings!!! I was talking about a statistic and how your correlation made no sense. I never mentioned Quran. I never mentioned Hadith and I never defended Islam in this thread. I have been talking about harassment. Are you just reciting stuff? You should apologize because not only am I GOING to say something else, I never said what you assume in the FIRST place. I never once turned this into a religious debate. Not because I am above it but because it is not relevant to the discussion. You are the one who keeps talking about Zakah and eating habits in a topic about harassment. When have I once referenced religion? You either do not know how to read or have ADHD.

and P.S. obviously you are bored. You keep imagining that you are reading the same thing over and over again. It is extremely boring to keep responding to posts that do not exist and never did.

Melika - I too am confused.

Dee07 was at pains to avoid talking about Islam, but rather challenged your view that the harrassment was due to Islam. He rather made reference to why the harassment in Cairo could not be attributed to any one religion and challenged you to provide evidence for your previous statements.

It's fair and well to share your views about Islam and say that this is your belief, but quite another to link it to a survey's results (which is what this thread is about) and challenge those (like me and the authors of the original article eh pasted) who say that the harassment is taking place not because of religious teaching, but despite religious teachings, and has other causes.

I don't know what is the unclear point for you. I claimed that harassments are because of Islam's teaching, and I supported my idea, with the logioc, that when Islam Interferes with your way of dress code and interaction, it will result in disorders and chaos. very simple!

We understand that.

However dee07 challenged the logic with some pretty well-made arguments based on first hand experience of Cairo's specific issues.

Fair enough, so we now know this is a view based on 'logic'.

Thanks for sharing your views - whilst it is clearly not the issue in Cairo, perhaps in other countries you are familiar with this is the case. I've not seen any evidence that Islam's rules on modest behaviour and dress result in 'disorder and chaos' - but rather have argued that I agree with the original posting by eh that following Islam's rules on modest behaviour would avoid the harassment being faced by 60% of women on the streets of Cairo.

So, let's agree to disagree. Your experience is different from mine and your conclusions are different from mine. My logic is the same as that found in the original article - modest behaviour and dress reduces se.xual harassment, not increases it.

Most people, however, argue that it is part of a bigger problem — one that most Egyptians would rather ignore. Sexual relationships are restricted in the religious country where 20 per cent of the population live on less than $2 a day and men and women must often wait years until they can afford to get married. Pornography, which is illegal, has become widespread because of the internet and mobile telephones.

The author's conclusions of why Egypt is suffering from male gropers is also enlightening.............

And here's a video explaining the problem in Egypt - fast forward to the one minute mark:

eh- I have to ask - did you actually read through this article this time?

In what way does what the article say disagree with what dee07 posted - regarding why Egyptian men (Copts, Muslims etc) grope women in Cairo?

Is the solution, in your mind, that men should be allowed to have s.ex before marriage and have free access to p.orn? (At your age, you probably believe this is more important than many things - n'est pas?)
