Well If we look at 30% being VLT and not range of darkness 0 being lightest and 100% maximum. I think I think 30% is way more than enough ! Its quite dark.

But which one is it. Is it 30% Visble Light Transmission or 30% being the shade of darkness ? This I think is one of the biggest gray area in this whole ordeal.

"7. Driving without a driver’s licence" ---> it's irrelevant for me. having the UAE license doesn't mean no/less accident than without it (example experienced driver who has already other countries' licenses).

Well in that case I don't see why everybody is moaning. The "Dark" tint I mentoned I had on my L/C was 50% on the darkness scale and I consider it quite dark. 70% dark scale or 30% VLT is wayyyy too much. I think most of the so called "over tinted" cars we are talking about are probally with in legal limits then.

But somehow I have my doubts that 30% VLT is the actual legal limit ? That would be 70% in the dark category !

I had sort of assumed they meant without any license at all, in other words not having passed a test anywhere! I guess it's not clear. :)

I have on my vehicle the legal limit as installed by 3M, installed on the side and the rear, nothing on the front apart from the factory installed tint of approximately the top 10cm of the windscreen. The other Company that does a good job is V-Cool this one is on my wifes vehicle, they are the official 30% tint and whichever way you want to work it out their is no way these blacked out monsters roaming the streets are legal or safe.

Two important issues I see:

1. No clarity what actually 30% tint means. I know, that some workshops/dealers claim that it is VLT - but I highly doubt that they know more about it for real than any of us. However, it would be logical to implement a minimum 70% VLT tinting rule for the safety reasons... Plus: clear films provide better heat protection after all.

2. Believing that 30% VLT is the maximum tinting limit... how can the police tell that it is 20% or 35%? Do they have the right tools beside their eyes to measure it?

3. No clarity if a clear, or very lightly tinted film can be used on FWS.

The regulation again is MISLEADING. Moreover, no legal document, tinting law or at least an industry-relevant specification is at the inquirer's disposal. You can not acquire more information through the police's website, nor through RTA. There is just no one to address this query OFFICIALLY.

What it all means? If you have tinted windows, you might be fined.

You get authentic 3M tinted film applied by a respectable garage or workshop who give you the 3M written guarantee. If you want to cut corners then take what you get.

How much more simple can it be?

Speedhump: i believe it is not the question of film brand, as the regulation is not mentioning any.

No what I meant was it's a brand which is known and trusted, if it says it is 30 pct then it will be (so long as you go to a good workshop who hopefully don't buy counterfeit parts, etc.). It's as always; a matter of getting what you pay for.

And what I meant :) is that 30 pct tint is not an obvious term. It's ok to have a certification of the 30% VLT - but hey, the police can always say that it was a misunderstanding and a minimum of 70% VLT is allowed. Fine and much hassle is to follow. Am I too pessimistic? I doubt.

How about the FWS?

big reputable company/brand won't make a fool of themselves by lying to their customers. moreover 3M is not known only for window tint but a lot more state-of-the-art and techie products. they provide real demo. they have all the technology, and that's what we (or i) believe.

second, they give a certificate of warranty for 5 years. total replacement if any damage such as bubbles, color change, etc.

ps: i'm not in any way related to 3M, but happen to be their customer.

so if i spend i dont know 300dhs on the tints and get a guarantee (wow big deal) and i decide to sell the car down 2 years. well i guess i can always take the tints of my previous car and put it on my new car :D cos i still got 3 years guarantee :D

sorry mate there is no special nano technology involved in it. EVERYTHING is made in China as we know it. it is the oldest marketting gimick so that ppl can spend money, but u dont know that u can get the same quality and cheaper films from your irani boys :D

oh yeh i spent 80dhs on my tints, had them for 2 years without any guarantee and there are no bubbles or scratches whatsoever.

u want a pic?

Like I said I have a few good friends who own and run car accesory shops, there is nothing really so great about 3M, there are other very good products out there, mostly American and Canadian films one of them is called Cardinal real quality stuff, used to be 30 bucks for a 3m roll ( whole sale price to the accesory shop dudes ). 3M have just created hype about there product and so called " guarantees ". The 3M tint is actually darken than what is generally refered to as the legal 30%. Which is actually the not VLT but the shade of darkness ie the interior and occupants of the car should be clearly visible at all times. ( I asked )

Every 3M roll sold the shop owners have to show a bill to the 3M suppliers that they haven't under sold it at a cheaper price otherwise they don't get new stock.

The shop owners are forced to sell at a very high markup, although they dont mind at all. Its totally rediculas to hear people paying thousands for a tint job when the material used is not more than a few hunderd at the most. I know I spent a hell lot of time hanging out at my mates shops.

Its ironic to see the more people are charged the more they think they are being ther sold " the real deal " and if it is priced reasonably or cheap then there is something funny about it. Thats also the state of workshops in Al Qouz with placese like Max Garage, AAA and Off road zone.

My mate never charges me anything other than what the film costs and I've never paid over a 100 bucks for any of my fullsized 4x4's.

Back to the question of Tinting the law is out there but since since its affects them and there people the most, is hardly ever enforced to the fullest extent.

Maybe a "poor" emarati comming from a unkown clan and very low on the wasta scale does get fined everynow and then During the spot checks on jumeriah beach road every now and then. Which later on he calls his connected friends and get around paying for it anyways or having it greatly reduced at a worst case scenario !

It is of course your own choice, some of us prefer to do the correct thing with guaranteed products, I bet you also have a whole host of Chinese DVD's as well.

everyone has preferences. and i know most of stuffs now are made in asian countries.

i'm not a brand maniac nor fashionable ("just because all people do/have it" attitude). i don't buy overpriced Sony/Toshiba laptop, i'm happy enough with Samsung smartphone over iPhone, blackberry, or overpriced Nokia. but some things, like window tint, i want the good one because i believe so. i buy it for its heat repellant (though nothing can block the heat), not simply blackened film.

but you would have had some preferences or reasons why you'd buy brand A car, or brand B mobile phone, or brand C clothings, wouldn't you? unless your best favorite hangout place is Dragon Mart ;)

I really can't believe you guys are wasting so many words on that turd. Read say the last ten of his posts and see if he ever has anything to say apart from just argument, negativity and cynicism (he won't understand that word). Just try it, it'll take five minutes maximum.

He gets my /ignore argument now and in future for his pathetic and childish scribblings.

Join me, it's lovely not to have to waste your time and words on someone whom you know has no capacity to modify his views.
