Dubai International Airport's Run To The Top Jul 27, 2009
Dubai Int. Airport is handling the global recession very well in terms of passenger traffic. Near double digit growth in June:

Also gaining ground in the list of major airports in the world. Currently number 6 so we Dutchies can still enjoy the number 3 position for a little while....until Maktoum Int. Airport opens late next year....oh boy... :D

Maktoum Int. Airport will become the biggest transit hub in the world in a few years, probably ;)
Emirates Airlines domestic gateway will remain at Dubai Int. Airport according to my information.

From the begining, it really doesn't make any sense to retain the downtown airport once the new one is up and running.

To my knowledge it was a complimentary airport to Dubai int. Airport. I found some information that backs this;

The airport will complement Dubai International Airport, some 40km away. The airport itself is surrounded by a large logistics hub, an ultra-luxurious golf resort (with suburban housing interwoven between greens and fairways), an expansive trade and exhibition facility (3 million square metres of exhibition space--would become the world's largest single exhibition site/location/address/destination), a massive commercial district, and a spacious residential/housing district.[

sources:
1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Maktoum ... al_Airport
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubai_Inte ... al_Airport

From the linked source information you can derive that both airports have a Masterplan, one being Dubai int. Airport Masterplan and the other Dubai World Central Masterplan. They have a significant time overlap to accomodate the expansion of both airports, complimentary to eachother.

Emirates has given notice of their wish to keep all operations at Dubai Int. Airport as they initially were planned to move to Al Maktoum Int. Airport.

Instead they have a brand new terminal system for themselves at DXB in the future.

Initially plans were to connect Dubai Int Airport with the Purple Line (transportation system plans) that would connect it with Al Maktoum Int. Airport. This planned Purple Line is on hold and supposedly even cancelled.

Hope this enlightens you some more. Ciao

It's interesting that Dubai International Airport is picking up trade. Not of people LEAVING , I hope?

Sage. It would be incredible that after spending what must have been an insane amount of money expanding Dubai Int'l, and building a state of the art new terminal, and huge new Emirates offices opposite it, they would close it after a few years. That just can't be right......

The problem was that they needed to expand the airport quickly, to establish a completely new airport takes much longer and their would have been huge capacity problems at the existing facility. It is possible however due to the economic downturn that they may re-think some things. The original plan was definitely to eventually close the existing airport in favour of the new one.

The current airport will close when it no longer has enough capacity.
Imagine London City Airport, with Heathrow waiting in the wings.

Plus there is still politics involved over the land the airport is actually built on! The guys in Sharjah want a slice.

Sheikh Mo wanted a share in Air Arabia, dude in Sharjah 'NO!'. Sheikh Mo 'Okay I start Fly Dubai!'.

Have they got the MONEY to expand the new airport as they please?

Is the extra traffic at present ,people leaving Dubai in droves , and more curious people stopping off on their way to the Far East or Oz ?

Or is it really VALUABLE traffic......extra visitors on longer holidays to Dubai, or extra shoppers?

The Mail on Sunday magazine in the UK had yet another article which read very badly for Dubai last Sunday. Recession, decay and decline were the themes.........not expansion and investment!!

It also describes a non-democratic place where risk-takers and debtors are put in prison without fair trials.

Such articles will frighten international investors .

Dubai has many grandiose plans....like the new airport ...but are they all needed ? How many will be completed?

Think on this as well !! Dubai has already spent BILLIONS on trying to be the new financial centre of the Middle East, fitting in between Hong Kong and London. It needed to DISPLAY FINANCIAL GRAVITAS AND WISDOM !!.........to be a SAFE HAVEN FOR MONEY !!

Yet , it is now seen to be a PROFLIGATE , SPENDTHRIFT place, living well above its means !!...........SO ARE INTERNATIONAL FINANCIERS AND INVESTORS GOING TO TRUST IT WITH THEIR MONEY??

Dubai's REPUTATION has PLUMMETED......and Dubai will not keep it quiet......try as they may!!

I just wonder who really cares, apart from you who often posts these LOUD messages, and UAE nationals?

Concentrate on your own economic crisis, you can buy brand new suits in the UK for seventeen Pounds Sterling. Is that GOOD? I really don't want more penniless losers from the UK here, thanks.

Your posts say nothing new mate. Just spewing out all the stuff we have heard already. And your point is?

As like some other airports in other countries, most probably the current one will be used for domestic/regional/low cost airlines, where the new Al Maktoum will be for long haul/international flights.

And about the high passenger traffic in Dubai, it must be traffic OUT of the country due to crisis and redundancies :D

The new airport will be used primarily for cargo to start off with. That was the original plan.

That is correct, to be followed by the closure of the downtown airport with all operations moving to the new one in about 10 years.

Speedhump,
You're changing your tune ! How come a few capitals are LOUD ?

NO printed words are loud......apart from in the mind of the READER !!

I cannot understand people who cannot cope with reading a few capitals. When the French, especially , take to the streets in protest, you will notice that their banners are always a mixture of Upper case or capitals for EMPHASIS and lower case words.

What's the big deal ?? Why are internet readers so sensitive?

I merely reported what is in the Mail on Sunday magazine last Sunday , so why jump down my throat ? I have obviously touched a nerve with you Humpy, with that last posting. You have not reacted like that before! Your reaction to my limerick was also very critical.

Do you work in the FINANCIAL or AIRPORT sectors in Dubai?

I'm telling the truth !! Dubai is spending BILLIONS creating a Middle East financial sector to fit in the time gap between Hong Kong / Tokyo and London, but if it runs its own financial affairs so badly, with unbridled ,profligate spending on grandiose schemes it cannot afford, then it won't be TRUSTED as a financial centre ! People from other countries will be afraid to get involved with Dubai.

The Middle East countries that have behaved with more restraint are Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi. They both have the oil and gas to support their investments.

Dubai MUST complete the projects it has started and bring more financial stability , TRUST and GRAVITAS into its economy. The only people capable of bailing them out are Abu Dhabi , who would then want more control over Dubai.

Al Maktoum Airport is really MASSIVE . Dubai needs extra air traffic of all kinds to make full use of Al Maktoum Airport.

I think my criticism of you was actually quite muted.

You seem to specialise in these posts that read like email spam: GUARANTEEING you AMAZING RETURNS for only an investment of ONE DOLLAR. REPLY NOW.

I remember that you received comments from other 'internet users' in the past saying that it isn't very attractive or well received. Do you remember the jokes about AOL (America Online) users in the old days when Americans started flooding online in the early 90's?

The emphasis of your points should come from the use of grammar and the choice of words rather than artifical bellowing at your audience. I have no doubt at all that a wordsmith like you could achieve that goal. ;)

Your posts are filled with questions and capitals. I don't think you receive many replies to your hosts of questions. Maybe that's the reason.

Absolutely nothing personal in this. Also I don't work in either of those sectors
you mentioned. My income still at 2nd half 2007 levels, a little more in fact, so it could be worse for me. Last year records for most people were ridiculous and unsustainable. Shame that so many people went out and bought new houses and cars. :)

I will promise to be less crabby in future.

Speedie,

How come capitals are loud? NO printed words are "loud" . That is a physical and scientific impossibility . it says a lot about YOUR MIND that you cannot read capital letters without getting a sense of NOISE when you read capitals .

What is it ? Are you hyper-sensitive or what? If some internet "guru" had not BRAINWASHED you into thinking that cpitals made a "noise" , how could you ever dream it up ?

If I received a typed letter by Royal Mail , consisting of capitals , I would read it ...no problem......without even thinking there was "shouting" in it?

What line of work are you in......or is that a secret.....that needs whispering ??

Method,

You are telling me to "calm down" . I am calm. Are you merely basing remark on CAPITAL LETTERS? In what way are they not calm?

They are merely for emphasis. So WHY do they make you think of "shouting" ? Because someone has told you so ?

Well, I cannot hear any "excitable noise" coming from any printed word.

However, it is fascinating that the READER , not the writer detects noise.

It tells me a lot about brain-washed readers.

It is just commonly understood that the common use of capital letters denotes shouting.
