The cost of travelling on the new Dubai Metro, which launches in September, will range between 80 fils and AED5.80, transport chiefs announced on Monday.

I thought I was dreaming, as the fares are very reasonable.

They have made the fares 5.80 or 80 fils to encourage peopel to buy cards instead of paying for single journeys (as they would most likely lose the 20 fils due to lack of change)

Dubai: The minimum fare for the Dubai Metro for a short trip of up to three kilometers will be Dh1.8 if the passenger is using a prepaid card and Dh2 for a standard ticket.

The maximum fare for a single journey on the Dubai metro will be Dh6.5 in case of using a standard ticket and Dh5.8 in case of using the card.

With regards to the Arabian Business article, how on earth can they seriously compare Paris or London's metro networks and prices to Dubai's?

They charge more because they're in cities that usually have anywhere up to a million tourists at any one time.

I don't think it'll turn into a disaster simply because running of the metro during it's initial years has been handed over to an external experienced firm. I think it's a British firm

NO.

Ultimately the Metro will fail unless the ruling company clearly state the objectives for this project.

Who is the Metro for?
Is the Metro designed to reduce road traffic?

Because think about it, the majority of people using the Metro will likely be people who don't drive currently. I would say it's a combination of:

* People who can't drive; and
* People who can't afford to drive

These people currently use either Taxi's or Buses. If less people use Buses and Taxi's will this reduce road traffic? (No) Does this mean that Dubai will have less Taxi's and Buses due to less demand? (Unlikely)

Most car drivers are unlikely to be swayed by the Metro unless it's priced low enough (and I don't think that's currently the case).

I could be wrong but if you ask me, the most popular line will be from the Airport to the Centre and back.[/list]

I believe that the rates are reasonable, this will lead to a success story for Dubai.
