Off course dude. Get out there and get ur Emirates ID card ASAP!

Essentially it all boils down to when ur visa is gonna expire. If it expires within the next few months than wait till you renew ur visa.
If you got 10 months or more left on ur visa than Get ur ID card.

What a joke that whole thing was. When was the last time you've heard it mentioned in the news here?

ID people: Get your ID now.
UAE: No.
ID people: Hurry up, everyone will need to have one soon.
UAE: Nah.
ID people: I'm serious now. We'll fine people and you will need one for everything soon.
UAE: Still not getting it.
ID people: That's it, everyone who doesn't have one by next week is deported or jailed!!!
UAE: Really? Nah, this is stupid.
ID people: Now you've done it. No services for anyone who doesn't have an ID card.
Sheikh ???????: Get rid of it.
ID people: ...................

[Life returns to normal]

The people at EIDA were monkeys who couldn't find their own ***es if they were given a map. Plus no one accepts the card anyway, so there is no point in having one.

I'm sure that right now there are university subjects that use this ID thing as an example of how NOT to run administration/public education etc programs. It was absolute stuff up from whoa to go.

Hey Smoggie don't listen to these clowns. Ur supposed to procure ur id card..Period!

The government hasn't invested so heavily in the EIDA just to stimulate the economy. Of course the receipts from the ID card will provide awesome revenues for the government.

As of now they may say it's of no use blah blah blah.

Tomorrow when the authorities give you a deadline and all government institutions insist on an ID card, you'll be scrambling.

Then I assure you RB will pull out every trick out of his bag to avoid the rush and get his card, he'll do the Salaams, wave his lil prized possession ( Brit Passport) around, might even wear a kandura.... :D

I don't get what the big deal is?

In Abu-Dhabi,
You walk in, pick a coupon, (or make an appointment), bring in the completed online form and in less than 2-3 hrs ur good to go. In a weeks time you'll be in possession of ur card!

The reason I asked was because it does seem to have disappeared from the media. Somebody mentioned it to and I thought I would check it out.

In my opinion it will not get off the ground.
They do not have the skills or know how to run such a thing. It would be yet another "white elephant". But the whole point is to generate lots of money.....right?

Oman implemented the similar card system more than 5 years ago. It was done in a phased manner - replacing the labor cards. So all people doing their visa renewals got it and anyone new coming into the country got it. so separate entities and 5-8 hour processes.

And last I heard they just started using the system for procedures. - which makes it about 5 years to get the public departments to phase in the system.

How long over here?????

I already have an e-gate card, this is my second one, more than 2 years now. To be honest they are a great time saver especially on arrival.

I got an e-gate card in 2005 but it expired long ago. It was useful once the system started working properly but it was pain to get from DNRD so I never bothered renewing it.

I'll get my new ID card, which arrived last weekend, enabled for the e-gates, once I find out where in the airport they do it. Can't be bothered to go back to one of the ID authority offices again.

I don't understand why us expats have to get ID cards. After all it is a National ID card so should only apply to Nationals i.e Locals. All expats have enough cards to carry anyways. All are issued Labour cards anyways, so why the need for this, replacing hard earned cash with another useless plastic card in your wallet !

I even remembering reading an statement from an high ranking official or minister in the ministry of interior or something ( Can't remember it was a long time back ) That the National ID cards should only be for nationals as expats should not require them.

I would understand if long time residents with possiblity of obtaining citizenship might need one, obviously thats not goin to happen, So what's the point.

Pakistan has similar ID cards called NIC's national Id cards, but its only for the citizens of pakistan not expats, no matter how long they have been staying there.

A labour card is tied to employment. If you change jobs it all has to be redone to be valid. There must be a lot of that right now and going forward, since now workers can change jobs without a LONO if they are unpaid for two months, even once (if) they get their backpay.

Also if workers are now allowed to stay in the UAE for months while looking for new work, they will be asked for some current valid ID and I guess they won't have a labour card and won't want to carry their passport around everywhere to show their current visa.

An ID card is much more like a passport, especially if they let it be useful for interacting with government departments (including charging with cash), e-gate use (already in action I think), etc.

It's more centralised and so should be more useful to its carrier as well as the Government.

Not saying that I welcome it of course, but I keep a wallet the size of China already, to hold all the plastic. :)

edit: speeling.
