Dubai, and it`s draconian law
Bouncing a check, for example, is punishable with jail. Those who flee the emirate are known as skips.

But the good news is;- Most of the emirate’s banks are not affiliated with E.U. financial institutions, so those who flee do not have to worry about creditors.

Police have issued warrants against the deserters and those who return risk arrest at the airport

Oh yes the banks certainly do! They sell the debts onto international debt collectors, so don't think you can rack up debts and make a run for it!

But the jailing for non-payment is ridiculous! erm how can you work to earn money if you're in prison?

Nope, they'll catch up with you sooner or later, wherever you are in the world! Seen it happen. And the limits are not that much 50,000 - 100,000 Dirhams and they'll come after you for that. More than and they will make a good effort to find you.

Yeah, banks didn't get where they are by writing off debts. As Choc said they'll just sell the debt to a collection agency in your home country who will come find you.

It does keep you out of UAE jail, but they'll get you eventually I think. Still, better than jail here, and you can always declare bankruptcy when you get home.

Easier said tan done Sage, when many people take out loans to pay their rent and for other things, then get laid off, can't find another job and have no way of paying back the cash.

What then?

But we don't pay taxes in UAE and neither its a socialist economy so why should we expect them to support us when we can't clear our debts.

But why should you expect them to put you in jail? You know very well that bouncing a cheque should be a civil not criminal offence.

That's the whole point. You can't. They will put you in jail if you had issued post-dated cheques which bounce, so you can't even earn any money. It's totally stupid, one of the few things here that I fail to understand why they are not changing.

I hope you're not in that position! That's why the only solution for some people is to head to the airport immediately. It may be illegal but you would do the same. These people are I would say generally the ones who have been earning good money for 3-4 years but saved nothing and blown it all while keeping their credit cards maxed and grabbing high car loans. They have themselves to blame, and also the banks and card companies for showing such small regard for people's actual incomes and abilities to pay back. The owners of the banks should go to jail if anyone should.

I'm not in that position....yet. I work in fin servs so totally agree with what you said. Lenders were always supposed to abide by 'responsible lending' but didn't. As a result, lots of people, self included to extent, could get hands on money easily and spend, inflation rises etc etc then, pop, suddenly credit crunch happens. It had to happen and we'll all be wiser for it, for another few years anyway

There was some talk several years ago about establishing a credit agency. That would have been helpful because the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing when it comes to credit cards and loans.

To a degree those in HR who issued letters confirming salary statements handed them out with no regard to the trouble the employee would end up with so much outstanding debt.

When I had an employee ask for a salary confirmation letter to a bank and then came back claiming that the loan was denied, I asked for the original letter back. Oops, didn't have it. Oops, sorry no second letter.

I can remember the days when bank reps went to your office to help you with the paperwork for loans and credit cards. Gave them out left, right and center.
