Did Panorama do an expose on Canada as well?

What were their findings?

Its bigger than Denmark?
Its cold in the winter and warm in the summer?
They have funny looking deer that walk down the streets in some towns?
They speak French...a bit...in places?
They speak with a funny kind of American accent, eh?
The X Files is filmed there so they must have aliens?
Their cops ride horses and wear red jackets?

Shock horror!

Why go off the point about Canada ? Those that do are merely avoiding some home-truths about Dubai , which were exposed on Panorama.

Insistent!? A UK politician 'has' to say this because of diplomacy. They hereby distance themselves from it by openly refusing to believe the full criticism. Its merely to protect some of the trade agreements and negotiations around it. Pure hypocrisy thats what it is.

You all know that things aren't as bad as they are told to be. But if it happens to a majority of workers than we have ourselves a true issue, don't we?

Exaggeration or not. Don't you think those promotion flyers are exaggerated? Are things really that rose coloured in Dubai!?

Boy, I suddenly hear that a country like Dubai has the same high quality levels of human rights policies as the Netherlands. Unbelievable. I'm going to tell the workers tomorrow, they be glad to hear that finally!

Yeps, minor mistake.

I'm not perfect either Kid. It used to be a trading town, now its a city, soon its a country-within-an-emirate-within-a-group-of-emirates called the UAE.

More crying to do? There are other people out there that need more tissues than you dude. They go first.

Dubai/UAE and the Netherlands are either end of the spectrum , when it comes to human rights.

Amsterdam is the MOST LIBERAL place on Earth. It allows prostitutes ,controlled by the State , to sit in shop windows ; cannabis to be smoked freely in cafes etc.

But , what has it achieved? When I was last there, about 10 years ago, a black guy was walking down the street , announcing " Cocaine for the brain!!" as he tried to sell cocaine openly.

That is the trouble with such liberalism....SOFT DRUGS ATTRACT DRUG DEALERS AND HARDER DRUGS!!

Amsterdam has become TAWDRY!!

Meanwhile, Dubai has more discipline , but hypocritically allows prostitutes to work...but not in windows!!
Drugs are frowned upon........WELL DONE DUBAI!! I agree with that!!

WE MUST HAVE FREEDOMS....BUT WE MUST MAINTAIN A SENSE OF DECORUM AND DISCIPLINE IN SOCIETY !!

Well, I'm no expert in drugs control, but I do know that the US of A is momentarily researching our drugs control model to review whether they can adopt certain aspects within their moral and christian limits. Because they see that hard drugs is way harder to control without a legalized and thus a controllable soft drugs regulatory system.

In Holland our soft drugs cafés are inspected without announcement and if you (the owner) violate the soft drug rules (possession or stock related) you get fined. IF they find out that same coffeeshop (thats what they are called here) is dealing harddrugs or has those dealers in their premises, they are closed immediately by SWAT-like narcotic teams.

So, by controlling the soft drugs sector in Holland they have a direct eye on the harddrugs sector since they get no chance of settling down. The narcotic brigades are constantly scanning undercover for that kind of practices. But indeed, in busy Amsterdam there are guys who offer tourists some coke or speed. Those guys are not the big dealers. That are puppies and low lifes that sell peppermint and washing powder mixed with speed or something. That is not what narcotic brigades are for. Police handles them.

There are some issues of course. Every large city has them. XTC (MDMA partydrug) was a big problem in the partyscene in Holland. Thats why they introduced the narcotics teams working together with import nation US of A, who gets a lot of 'our XTC product' between the borders. The results are phenominal. Greatest catches ever.

This is 100 percent normal in their home country, it's what they are used to. You get toilets in older shopping malls here that are no better cleanliness-wise. For god's sake office workers in Singapore have been known to get up and stand (squat) on toilet seats in office blocks because they don't even like sitting while they sh*t. People from the regions we are discussing (Subcontinent and Asia) are very comfortable squatting instead of sitting in general. It's how they live. You just cannot use your own standards to judge how others live.

It showed all the unflushed crap in full colour!!.

There has been a huge problem in Dubai with sewage disposal. I am sure you would have read about it. The Municipality has allowed huge building development and seen the massive increase in the population while doing nothing about increasing sewage processing plants to cope. I can't say with certainty if that's why these workers were not getting their sewage tanks emptied though. For your guidance the villas in my area (which is not low rent but just a little older than some developments) were reliant on sewage tanks until just last year (although the landlord always made sure they were emptied timely).

The drains between their "chalets" were blocked and overflowing with sewage. The workers had stepping stones to get over the areas of surface sewage.

This happens when it rains, the streets also flood although I think not so much this year. One of the newer expats housing developments was also engulfed by sewage lakes last year during the rains, crap was floating in living rooms. This is just par for the course I'm afraid, it gets reported in the newspapers (the workers troubles), it is NOT possible for anyone to brush it under the carpet, companies have to deal with it, so this exposé is nothing of the sort.

Workers secretly filmed [ from India] said they had to PAY agents to get a job in Dubai, and that it would take them ages, just to pay the fee back.

and what... blame Dubai for the actions of corrupt 'slavers' in the Subcontinent which is were this all hapens, before they even come to the UAE?

It will no doubt be repeated. I bet that bits will find their way onto You Tube.

I'm looking for this on the Internet. I want to see it for myself. Most of the people talking here didn't even see it.

With regard to general cleanliness, desertdude already spelled out very clearly that nice labour camps are very quickly trashed by the workers who have very low standards of hygene and social customs, which they have brought from their village back home. He has been living here for donkey's years and also told you in this or another similar thread (which you all read, I have no doubt) that he has first hand experience of labour camps. Who are you all to just ignore what he says?

There is some knife crime in the UK, it doesn't mean every kid carries a knife although if you read the Daily Mail newspaper you would believe that there is open warfare on every city street in the UK. There are some bad practises in Dubai. Some. UK media are ust digging hard to find it and portraying it as endemic which it really isn't, just like they are trying to portray every British expat they 'find' as rich, lazy, fat and drunk, which is in actual fact a total lie. The fiction being that this is the norm, not that some people like it exist, as they do the world over.

I really am finished commenting on these UK media excesses now.

desertdudeshj wrote:I truly symphatise with the labourers situation but you have to look at the other side aswell. True you and me think they are under paid and live in Squalid conditions. I've been to some labour camps and Bachelor accomodations it really is insane there. But I've also asked them is it really worth all this crap only to make anywhere from 500 to 700dhs a month.

You'd be surprised at the answer I got. They said even though to us ( And I'm no rich man here ) this might seem like very little money but he said he is happy in the knowledge that his family back home will have roof on their head and food on the table which if he was back home might not be possibly.

So actually for most it really is a increase in living of standard and a better economic option to work here than to stay back home and be homeless and hungry.

Just thought I'd share the other side of the story aswell.

Way they get treated by their respected employers is another story altoghter

You missed the big picture. We are all fighting for free will. Yes they make more money, but their is a diff in cost of living. In India the cost of living is much lower, specially in villages and thus these guys will save from $3 that they would earn a day. Having said that, there are more workers from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and some of them do not even speak languages understood by Europeans, Indians, Pakistanis or Arabs.

At least I am fighting for their right to go home once a year. Right to have decent accomodation, eatable food, decent sleeping bed. These people are poor and need to survive. Their weakness is being exploited. People are making profit from their need to survive.

The other thing that baffles me is their ability to build. With no education, these people have learnt the art and perfected it. Most of the UAE infrastructure is fab and comparable to Western countries. These people have built the same as Western world, but without any education or training. I just do not get this point.

The new Dubai clearly reflects that education is just not imparted through right medium, there will be exception to the rule. But, this exception deserves a salute.

They should teach the rules for the level of cleanliness they expect in the camps and then provide proper cleaning services. In Singapore bathrooms there are signs that tell people not to squat on the seats for hygiene reasons, and most bathrooms contain both types of toilets, so people can use the kind they prefer. Busy public women's bathrooms that don't have a person cleaning every hour can be a disaster, so I can only imagine what a busy men's bathroom looks like if it only gets cleaned once a day, if that! Gak!

People will revert to their normal mode of behaviour when left with a large number of their countrymen. There is no teaching them. And cleaning goes no way towards repairing wilful damage or large scale neglect.

However it 's quite possible than the cleaning is not good enough also, I grant you. It must be dismaying for cleaners to face what they have to face daily cleaning up the mess of uneducated (I think we have to say uncivilised) people.

Darn, though I was finished! ;)

Speedie,
I know there are squat toilets in many parts of the world......including a fine city like Paris. I have NO problem with them. But they MUST FLUSH properly and be clean, and sewage systems need to be clear ...not spill filth to the surface..

You have 110 degrees Fahrenheit in Dubai ....and HUMIDITY.

It is IDEAL FOR FLIES, MOSQUITOES ..........AND CHOLERA!!

If disease hits 5 STAR HOTELS.....DUBAI IS FINISHED!!

LECTURE THE ASIAN WORKERS!! TRAIN THEM IN CLEANLINESS !!
BUT DON'T BLAME THEM IF THEIR TOILETS DO NOT HAVE WATER!!

RedKite is right!

Government can put up a thousand reports with a 10.000 dirham fine on it, but if that is the burden a construction company has to carry for neglecting proper sanitary conditions in Dubai, they are seriously not gonna do anything about it!!!

The toilet block costs more that that fine!

The government should ENFORCE this way harder and put the company out of work for instance! No participation to new projects etcetera etc.

The companies are responsible for proper amenities, but if that lacks that Government must enforce them one way or the other!

No way around that.

Most people seem to forget that FLIES KNOW NO BOUNDARIES. They will descend on all this filth and disease and transport it to the 5 star hotels.

How do you keep a fly off your sandwich all the time, as you sit by a pool in luxurious surroundings?

Dubai needs to treat these labour camps seriously and treat all its sewage properly.

Where does it end up? Is untreated sewage being pumped into the Arabian Gulf? If so , it will end up becalmed within the Palms . That will be nice for the millionaire property owners!!

I suppose that if it floats out to the WORLD , the latter could be called the TURD WORLD , rather like an Irishman pronounces Third World !!

That would be ironic!!
