Why pork is forbidden in ISLAM ? Jan 24, 2006
Bob: Tell me why is it that a Muslim is very particular about the words
Halaal and Haraam; what do they mean?

Yunus: That which is permissible is termed Halaal and that which is not
permissible is termed Haraam and it is the Quran which draws the
distinction between the two.

Bob: Can you give me an example?

Yunus: Yes, Islam has prohibited blood of any type. You will agree that
a chemical analysis of blood shows that it contains an abundance of uric
acid, a chemical substance which can be injurious to human health. "

Bob: You're right about the toxic nature of uric acid, in the human
being it is excreted as a waste product and in fact we are told that 98%
of the body's uric acid is extracted from the blood by the kidneys and
removed through urination.

Yunus: Now I think that you'll appreciate the special prescribed method
of animal slaughter in Islam.

Bob: What do you mean?

Yunus: You see, the wielder of the knife, whilst taking the name of the
'Almighty', makes an incision through the jugular veins, leaving all
other veins and organs intact.

"Bob: I see, this causes the death of the animal by a total loss of
blood from the body, rather than an injury to any vital organ. "

Yunus: Yes, were the organs, example the heart, the liver, or the brain
crippled or damaged, the animal could die immediately and its blood
would congeal in its veins and would eventually permeate the flesh. This
implies that the animal flesh would be permeated and contaminated with
uric acid and therefore very poisonous; only today did our dietitians
realize such a thing.

"Bob: Again, while on the topic of food; Why do Muslims condemn the
eating of pork or ham or any foods related to pigs or swine.

"Yunus: Actually, apart from the Quran prohibiting the consumption of
pork, bacon (pig flesh); in fact the Bible too in
Leviticus chapter 11,verse 8, regarding swine it says, ""of their flesh
(of the swine another name for pig) shall you not eat, and of their
carcass you shall not touch; they are " unclean to you."" Further, did
you know that a pig couldn't be slaughtered at the neck for it does not
have a neck; that is according to its natural anatomy. A Muslim reasons
that if the pig was to be slaughtered and fit for human consumption the
Creator would have provided it with a neck. "Nonetheless, all that
aside, I am sure you are well informed about the harmful effects of the
consumption of pork, in any form, be it pork chops, ham, bacon.

Bob: The medical science finds that there is a risk for various diseases
as the pig is found to be a host for many parasites and potential
diseases.

Yunus: Yes, even apart from that, as we talked about uric acid content
in the blood, it is important to note that the pig's
biochemistry excretes only 2% of its total uric acid content, the
remaining 98% remains as an integral part of the body.

The short answer to the question why Muslims don't eat pork is that God says we should not.

God doesn't actually give a reason in the Quran - unlike, for example, alcohol and gambling (which the Quran says there is some good for man, but as the bad outweighs the good, both are forbidden).

No reason is given for the prohibition of Pork.

The points made the post above are still valid reasons to explain perhaps why it is not a good idea to eat pork, but even if they were all nullified (let's say by genetic engineering so that it would be free of uric acid and parasites), then pork would still be forbidden.

Interestingly, I had my first club sandwich when I was in Dubai for the first time in 2003 - made with 'turkey ham' though!

For those hog-eaters of the forum, substitute 'dog' for 'pig' and you will get a feel for the aversion we have when pork is mentioned.

I have felt physically sick after munching on some bacon flavoured crisps by mistake and discovering the flavor. And those crisps are all artifically flaovoured and have never seen anything resembling a pig !! It was all in the mind.

On a more serious note - pigs are also physiologically very close to human beings - medical students practice on them due to similarities in anatomy. The risk of viruses crossing species is a major reason why pig organ transplants aren't used more widely.

Interestingly, cannibals in Papua New Guinea (I think) call a human carcass 'long pig' and say human flesh tastes like pig. Also, reports from people in war zones say the smell of burnt human flesh reminded them of bacon! (A former colleagues father told me this - his father was at the site of King David hotel when it was bombed in the 40s)

Yurgh..

Shafique,

That is very interesting, I also thought the reason for not eating pork was that it was thought to be an unclean animal.

You are a wealth of information....

Arniegang - a couple of verses from the Quran which talk of the prohibition of pork:

Chapter : 16 (Al-Nahl) Verse : 115
He has made unlawful for you only that which dies of itself and blood and the flesh of swine and that on which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But he who is driven by necessity to eat any of these things, being neither disobedient nor exceeding the limit, them, surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.

Chapter : 6 (Al-An`am) Verse : 145
Say, 'I find not in what has been revealed to me aught forbidden to an eater who desires to eat it, except it be that which dies of itself or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine - for all that is unclean - or what is profane, on which is invoked the name of other than Allah. But whoso is driven by necessity, being neither disobedient nor exceeding the limit, then, surely, they Lord is Most Forgiving, Merciful.

I stand corrected on a point I made earlier, as this last verse does say that pork, along with carrion and blood, are 'unclean'.

My argument should therefore be modified to say that we are not told of the exact nature of the 'uncleanliness' - but that all the evidence given above corroborate the statement of the Quran.

The verse that I generally refer to for the prohibition of pork is (which does not give the reason - and also refers to alcohol and gambing):

Chapter : 5 (Al-Ma'idah) Verse : 3
Forbidden to you is the flesh of an animal which dies of itself, and blood and the flesh of swine; and that on which is invoked the name of any other than Allah; and that which has been strangled; and that which has been beaten to death; and that which has been killed by a fall and that which has been gored to death; and that of which a wild animal has eaten, except that which you have properly slaughtered; and that which has been slaughtered at an altar as an offering to idols. And forbidden is also this that you seek to know your lot by the divining arrows. That is an act of disobedience. This day have those who disbelieve despaired of harming your religion. So fear them not, but fear ME. This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favour upon you and have chosen for you Islam as religion. But whoso is forced by hunger, without being wilfully inclined to sin, then, surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, and is Merciful.

Well, I have increased my knowledge today and apologise for the mistake I made in the earlier post.

(oh, and BTW - cloven foot and unclean are mentioned in the Bible as prohibitions for jews)

and I'm certainly not infallible - but I am sincere in beliefs, but do occasionally have to eat humble pie when I am wrong.

You'll also find that the reason many people who work in the firebrigade won't eat pork is because the smell is just like that of burning human flesh.

Sheep, Cows and goats are also Cloven hooved animals! That has nothing to do with it, that's foot and mouth disease, which affects these types of creatures.

Pigs are very intelligent animals and yes their biological make-up is pretty close to humans which is why they're the only animal whose organs can be used in human transplants. Many heart valve replacements are done using pig valves.

Also swine have a really accute sense of smell, so much so, that in some countries they're testing using them as 'sniffer pigs' if you will. It's the reason the French use them for sniffing out truffles.
