CLARIFICATION PLEASE Feb 16, 2009
They say you have to cover your arms and legs in Dubai. I read this in every magazine and books i see about Dubai. Yet I have seen so many woman doing the opposite. They dress in tubes, micro mini skirt and even see through material with bra completely exposed.

I am not complaining at all i think they look good and I wanted to dress comportably as well ok not in super micro minis though but I don't want to be breaking any rules or ending up in jail.

SO CLARIFICATIONS PLEASE WHICH IS WHICH? YOU CAN BE BRUTALLY HONEST I JUST WANT THE TRUTH

You can wear what ever you want here and the worst you will get is a good stare. But you'll probably be stared at anyway so who cares?

To be fair though, in the Mall of the Emirates on the TV screens in the food court I saw a sign that said "Woman are asked to please cover their knees and shoulders" or something like that. But nothing would happen if you wear normal western clothing... like most western/Filipino women do.

Depends where you are a bit I think. If you're in a nightclub then you'll see mini-skirts that look like belts, but you probably wouldn't wear that in the souks of Diera. You probably wouldn't wear that to the Sunday markets in Sydney either.

Basically, it's not like Iran or Saudi.

Technically you can wear what you want, but if you want to be respectful of the local culture, you will try to cover more than what you might wear on a summer vacation in other parts of the world.

Personally, if I felt like wearing a tank top I'd bring a pashmina along, and would wear pants. If I felt like wearing a skirt to the knee, I'd wear a 3/4 length sleeve top with it. Super-plunging necklines aren't appropriate, even if covering more arm. You will get stared at unless you wear an abaya, so just be prepared anyway. Being respectful is still the best way to go.

Why don't you just pull a burka over your head, Kelly.
That solves the Troll problem for once and for all ;)

No Kanelli is right! People should be more respectful of local customs and culture. It is not acceptable to go round the shopping malls looking like you just came off the beach or wearing skirts up to your butt cheeks, not many people would do that in their home countries or on holiday!

I always take a pashmina with me.

In the more localised areas of Dubai and old parts like the soukq etc you should cover up a bit more. If you go into Sharjah they will come down on you for not dressing decently.

Totally agree with you Chocs, some of the displays that you see in the Malls are quite unbelievable considering where we are.

That's true. I know a case when guards asked to leave Sahara Mall a woman with 3 kids only because her skirt didn't covered her knees...

In many of the more conservative Emirates, the standard rule of thumb is, you should be covered from shoulders to below the knees. They don't like guys wearing shorts either.

I know a guy who was reprimanded in Sharjah for wearing shorts.
