Fellow expats:
I recently answered an online ad about a technical writing assignment. Although this isn't really my line of work (I do web graphic design), I thought I'd give it a try and maybe make a little money on the side. Who knows, I might even consult in this area if I'm good enough.
Anyway, a few days ago, this client got in touch with me about possibly hiring me as a free-lancer.
I've never done copy/tech writing before, so I don't have any references or writing samples (outside of college papers) to show to this client.
I'm just wondering if it would be a good idea to offer my service for my first project for free, as a sort of trust-building measure. That way, if they're not satisfied with my work, they can drop me, and won't lose anything.
I'm just starting to get into consulting, so I'm wondering if my idea above is a normal or sound business practice. Any help or advice appreciated - thanks.
