hiya again Tomo

cant comment much on the rents, but theres loads of peeps in here well in touch.

If you have residency its easy to get a UAE licence. As you are from UK on a Euro licence, you just goto the traffic dept, pay the money and they just give you one - Easy and sorted.

The farther out of Dubai the cheaper it gets, but the worse the drive is. You want cheap? Go to Sharjah, but its a long drive but short kms.

You cannot drive without a UAE liscnce after residency.

Yes, you can hire a car easily on a UK DL, but cannot go outside Dubai (if you hire a car in Dubai). I am sure thats correct.

Also, staying out of Dubai is cheaper, substantially, but take Sharjah, it's less than 20miles away, and will take you approx 1 to 1.5 hours to get home (in rush hour traffic).

What you should try and do, if you can is share a place with someone else.

does anyone think it would be ok to do this type commute on a motorbike.
maybe not in the height of summer but it should be ok the rest of the year.

i ride 20 miles into london at the moment and takes 30 - 40 mins. is the road into dubai mainly highway? quite good condition?

My opinion is that a motorbike here would be like playing dodge ball. The traffic is "hairy" to say the least and speeds-170km/h not unusual in any lane including the hard shoulder!
Edit: The roads are brilliant in my opinion but the driving skills of those on them leaves alot to be desired!

Same opinion here..I think it would be highly risky, no matter how skilled you are.

thanks for the advice... i've got quite a high sense of self preservation.. so a comparison to dodge ball doesnt sound too good.

still quite fancy being a motorbike when i get to dubai, prehaps i'll just use it for lesure and a bit of off roading.

thanks
