How do you get rid of this cold & flu!!!!!! Jan 06, 2009
Oh please oh please if anyone has any suggestions I'd be so grateful!

I've had this on and off for months now and can't shift it! Tired of feeling run down and horrid!

Docs have just given me super strength antibiotics for a respiratory infection and basically said:

Blood pressure - crap
Immune sytem - crap
Everything - crap

Maybe I just need a vacation!

Hot-toddies always work for me i.e. whiskey, hot water, honey, bit of sugar and a squirt of lemon.

There are different variants of it mind.

Also, EXERCISE i.e. gym, running, sport etc, helps.

chocs I recommend raw garlic for breakfast everyday and some raw onion occasionally too.

Ways to make eating garlic for breakfast bearable: crushed or sliced

1. Spread it on toast and top with tomato, basil salt and pepper (some pesto too if you have it)
2. mix it in with baked beans (and bacon/cheese too if you like)
3. wrap in some pita with labneh tomato olives onions and cucumber

Interesting - thanks.

I always take erchinachea tablets and vit c.

I recently discovered Flutab, which is awsome, basically just knocks you out, but defo don't take them before driving or doing anything where you need to pay attention.

No. 1: Blow Your Nose Often -- and the Right Way
It's important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. But when you blow hard, pressure can cause an earache. The best way to blow your nose: Press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other. Wash your hands after blowing your nose.

No. 2: Stay Rested
Resting when you first come down with a cold or the flu helps your body direct its energy toward the immune battle. This battle taxes the body. So give it a little help by lying down under a blanket.

No. 3: Gargle
Gargling can moisten a sore throat and bring temporary relief. Try a teaspoon of salt dissolved in warm water, four times daily. To reduce the tickle in your throat, try an astringent gargle -- such as tea that contains tannin -- to tighten the membranes. Or use a thick, viscous gargle made with honey, popular in folk medicine. Steep one tablespoon of raspberry leaves or lemon juice in two cups of hot water; mix with one teaspoon of honey. Let the mixture cool to room temperature before gargling. Honey should never be given to children less than 1 year old.

No. 4: Drink Hot Liquids
Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, help prevent dehydration, and can soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat.

No. 5: Take a Steamy Shower
Steamy showers moisturize your nasal passages and relax you. If you're dizzy from the flu, run a steamy shower while you sit on a chair nearby and take a sponge bath.

No. 6: Use a Salve Under Your Nose
A small dab of mentholated salve under your nose can open breathing passages and help soothe the irritated skin at the base of the nose. Menthol, eucalyptus and camphor all have mild numbing ingredients that may help relieve the pain of a nose rubbed raw.

No. 7: Apply Hot or Cold Packs Around Your Congested Sinuses
Either temperature may help you feel more comfortable. You can buy reusable hot or cold packs at a drugstore. Or make your own. Take a damp washcloth and heat it for 55 seconds in a microwave (test the temperature first to make sure it's right for you.) Or take a small bag of frozen peas to use as a cold pack.

No. 8: Sleep With an Extra Pillow Under Your Head
This will help with the drainage of nasal passages. If the angle is too awkward, try placing the pillows between the mattress and the box springs to create a more gradual slope.

No. 9: Don't Fly Unless Necessary
There's no point adding stress to your already stressed-out upper respiratory system, and that's what the change in air pressure will do. Flying with cold or flu congestion can hurt your eardrums as a result of pressure changes during takeoff and landing. If you must fly, use a decongestant and carry a nasal spray with you to use just before takeoff and landing. Chewing gum and swallowing frequently can also help relieve pressure.
Remember, serious conditions can masquerade as the common cold and a mild infection can evolve into something more serious. If you have severe symptoms or are feeling sicker with each passing day, see a doctor.

Wishing you a quick recovery

Dubai generally does seem to be a much unhealthier place than say 8 years ago. Probably down to pollution etc.

I think a lot of what people believe as being cold or flu, is actually a dust/pollution allergy.

Ahhhhh *faints*

Wow thanks for that! Some super suggestions in there!

Yeah I like to steam my head, unfortunately I end up staying in there for hours as it's the only way to clear my lungs.

Also very important point about not giving honey to babies! Many people don't know that!

Cheers :D

You need to get properly checked out, sounds really like you are allergic to something, allergy medicine does not cure all.

I was advised the other week (as I was sick with flu & colds for 3 weeks as well), to observe SESAME

SESAME = Stop Eating Sh*t And More Exercise

1 x Fludrex
2 x Sedergine
15ml Rhinathiol Expectorant

Every 8 hours.

Unfortunately, it wasn't so effective without proper rest.

You are right, I was almost confined in the hospital because of insisting "not to go".

The Doctor told me (after going to the hospital when my sickness had been for over a month) "if you had delayed this a day more, you would have been in a very bad condition that could lead to serious lung infection and might cause damage that is not treatable by antibiotics."

I still didn't learn. Just plain stubborn maybe.

I got a similar speech, went something like if I had come 24hours later they would have taken me away in a wooden box, I did take it seriously. :D

Cold and Flu!!!!
I believe you can get rid of that in 3-5 days without any medicines,
Just if you r a smoker quit smoking completely for 5 days, don't even get close to it.

Drink a cup of warm lemon in the morning and if possible one before sleep.
At least sleep 8 continues hours, find a good blanket, and no A/C.
Eat fruits before lunch (apple/orange).
As well its highly recommended to drink as much soup as possible (really helps).
wish you all best of health,
M.

Once again you need to go and get your allergies checked, for your own good don't ignore the signs.

chocs,

not sure if this works for you, but it definitely does the job for me..
when i have cold, cough or flu ..i have cold red bull and / or cold mountain dew.. and the next thing i know after 1 or 2 hours is that its gone. been doing this since the time of school, years back.. and it still works.

get ..ah wait let me check the name ..benylin from any pharmacy, have it before you go to bed. should do the job the next morning or the day after.

and if you do not prefer meds.. have sulaimani (tea without milk) with lemon ..

get well soon
