Dubai will be dead soon and tourism will decline with it...people will realise that it is only a short stop place, not somwhere to form a base and certainly not a place to learn about culture etc etc...its good for business, spas (maybe a bit of shopping though London, Rome and NY kicks it to the ground)...sorry to say but it is very very tacky.
I'm glad this is not my home as i would probably not know any better..
I salute you for your brave point of view. And I wish you the best in 2009, whether in London, Dubai, or anywhere. It's good to know what you want and to work on it.
Unfortunately most of us (in Dubai) would never conclude a discussion of how good (or bad) the city is. Every one has a different set of objectives, expectations, and even turn-ons. We usually forget this simple fact when we discuss and end up empty handed...

I disagree with you. Even though it's not clear where it's heading now, and the world recession has made a lot of changes that may or may not be dealt with wisely. But cities do not fall in a blink of an eye.
Things would be more difficult, less interesting. Shopping may withdraw, people would think twice before coming to Dubai. And that's time for city to either "evolve", change patterns, get more balanced; Or get outnumbered by somewhere else.
People do not come here just for the sake of it. They are here for a better life and if they didn't find it they would look somewhere else, sooner or later.
For those who chose to live here, despite it's not home and it's not permanent and all; Pragmatically speaking: They need to do some effort to make the city more tolerable. Even if it's impossible for us (individually) to make rents less and wages more...
