Meeting people in Dubai? Dec 30, 2008
Hi everyone!

I'm new to Dubai and have been here a month. One thing I have noticed in my short spell is that people do not seem to want to socialise! everyone at work is 'coupled up' or has a family to go to or just want to do their own thing..

surely I am missing something, there must be some single fun loving people out there that want to explore the UAE and beyond and meet people from all walks of life...I mean. that's why we pack up at home and move abroad right? to experience different things in life and meet different people - it's not all work, work work! i'm getting so bored now that I'm thinking of going back to the UK!

I am a v sociable female, and have never had problems in meeting people and expanding my social circle in the past but this is just weird...maybe i was wrong about dubai. Perhaps it is just for people who want to make a quick buck and leave ???

Cheers!!

:)

It takes time to find your feet here and the right circle of friends that suit you. Don't try to rush it, it will happen.

There is a heavy work ethic here (its really the only reason we are here) and also its highly competitive, but many people are looking over their shoulders right now as no job is secure in the present climate. Unlike the UK, there are no safety nets here and loss of your job tends to mean a total lifestyle breakdown or back on the plane.

There is a large 'couples' scene, but if you stick with it, you will find the right people for you. As a girl, you will be welcomed with open arms in any of the bars or clubs here and will be fighting off the sleaze bags with a big stick in no time!

Dark Knight in all seriousness, will it still be hard to find a job in DBX for someone who has a degree from the United States + fortune 500 experience ? would you have an edge over some other candidates ? please kindly let me know, thank you.

A degree from the highly recognized University of Washington or Washington State University ? ? ?

don't know if you've heard of any of these tier 1 U.S.A institutions of higher education.

Companies here are always looking for qualified and experienced people. The intent of many is to create a better quality business in Dubai, however many will decide on price rather than quality first and take a lesser qualified person for less money if they can.

Many of the high salary senior expat executives have already found themselves put out to grass here due to the financial squeeze.

My cousin who is an Indian citizen in the states just got transferred here from some oil related company in Houston.

They sent him here with all the works: Villa (120K USD) two brand new cars, hell, even maid service!

Oh and he's no senior expat by any means. He has a simple Bachelor's in Science from an average American university w/5 years of experience.

He's enjoying DXB.............too bad he's too damn conservative for my taste.

So is it better to just seek an internal transfer to DXB/GCC ? rather then applying for jobs directly in the gulf ? what do you think ?

Likewise to the locals, a degree is a degree. If its from the University of Nowhereknown or from MIT, it makes no difference to them. They want a performer. If you don't perform, you are out. Period.

Coming from a western educational background and western culture may give you an advantage over someone from an Asian business culture, but you will still have to compete on the same playing field.

Right now, there are very few people hiring.

DK, is absolutely right! Don't rush to make friends in this place, as many people are superficial idiots, who'll just drag you around for the sake of it. Wait to make a decent circle of friends, who you can rely on.

FYI, you are welcome to PM me. All my mates rock and we're sound as a pound.

Of course you have to perform, I got that part down.

However, a western degree is still more preferred and I believe pays more, correct me if im wrong.

Sure it is. However, coming from a western culture has it's advantages. If my Indian cousin were to have been transferred from his original country, there is no way in hell he would be banking that much.

So your right BUT the western background is a bonus.

You do not send abuse to members of the forum - EVER!

You don't need to know where I'm from!

Your loss Boss............oh and I see that your now going to hold his hand as well.

I NEVER sent any pm's and this individual clearly has been on my case the second I posted the first thread.

He thinks highly of himself and likes to dictate terms and conditions to others whom are deemed "unworthy" of his presence on this forum.

Oh well, I'll leave anyway, I already got the information that I requested for.

Yeah you keep 'promising' to leave! So go ahead and do so!

Considering complaints are being made by seasoned members, who we do in fact know in person, who do you think we're going to believe here?! Plus it doesn't take a genuis to be able to check it either.

Like I said........your loss Boss.

Many people consider me to be some sort of a "gutsy journalist/reporter"
who asks questions that other shy away from asking because of being unfairly labeled

You will surely lose a very brazen contributing member on this forum.

By the way, I have already found a new home "international s e x guide.info" people over there are into mongering and welcoming me with open arms.

My application for political asylum has already been accepted, good riddance and so long!
