So why is that malls are so phenomenally successful in Dubai? And what do people look forward to while visiting a mall?

I find it strange that many of the residents infact use mall visits as a way of socialising and relaxation. Malls are seen as a place to relax and chill. This may be also due to the fact that Dubai's malls combine the shopping experience along with entertainment activities like cinemas, play areas, restaurants, performances etc.
