Earth Hour - Blackout for 1 hour to save the world! Mar 11, 2008
I received an invitation from my friend to take part in this global event. and I thought to share this information with you all. I will be taking part my self 8) Below is a summary of the message I received. I just wish that Dubai next time could take part officially as one of the participating cities

At 8pm on the 29 March, millions of people around the world will use the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

Mark your calendar and join WWF and our partners in the global "Earth Hour" movement by turning your lights off from 8-9 p.m. on March 29.

But there's much more to Earth Hour than the one-time event. Visit http://www.earthhour.org to see how you can make Earth Hour a part of your everyday life and find out ways to reduce your carbon dioxide emissions.

You can take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced. Join the Earth Hour movement now at http://www.earthhour.org

Where Will the Lights Go Off? Anyone can get involved and individuals around the world will be shutting the lights off in their homes and businesses. In addition, major participation is planned in 25 cities, on six continents, including Chicago, San Francisco, Copenhagen, Sydney, Manila, Tel Aviv, Bangkok, Dublin and Toronto. Find out more about what’s happening in these cities or get your town or local community involved.
Go to http://www.earthhour.org and sign up to create a bigger, better Earth Hour, and reduce your impact on climate change.

Thank you for switching your lights off and making a statement for planet Earth.

Quatroporte, I think I saw a documentary about this once. Calculations actually showed that you use more power when shutting everything down and then turn it on again, compared to letting everything just on for an hour. Is this correct?

The Governments of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, didn't officially announce it! In fact in a recent article, they said they would not be taking part as 'they weren't ready'!

What kind of lame excuse is this?

So let it be only light bulbs. I believe ppl. showed that lighting up all the the lights on the Eiffel tower consumes more power than leaving them on for an hour. If you want to give a signal fine (that is if you believe global warming is induced my human behaviour, which is a theory which gets less and less support), but I donot think you will save energy, rather the opposite.

Well that's cool, that individual companies have agreed to take part. Just a shame that the Municipalities aren't doing something on a large scale, like turn all the lights off on the Burj etc.

And yes generally speaking it's lights and tv's.

I think it's noble that each year they delay the inevitable exhaustion of fossil fuels by 1 hour.

That means, instead of the day the oil runs dry being the the 15th of January 2025, it will instead, be the 16th of January 2025.

Great idea. Keep it up!

Oh Manila is joining too? I doubt MERALCO unless NAPOCOR will mandate them to do so.

Lights in the house are always off from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm everyday.
