i been in Dubai for over a year now and still cant speak a word in Arabic, but i wanna learn, whats the best way to start and how do i go about it.

and the most important word you need to know

inshallah ... which can mean many things literally it means god willing. But you can use it when you want to indicate something will never happen too

that is really bad but true if you tell people inshallah, they will not take it, they will ask for confirmation. people miss used that term badly, that now it means never

Here's a free online Arabic lesson. I'm learning from that website too.

There are 3 levels. You can see it on the left panel. Each lesson will have the word in arabic, its translation and it even plays it for you so you know what it should sound like.

J, can you read urdu? because if you can, i was thinking that maybe posting in arabic text along with the english and the translation of the word may be of more help...then you could also recognize any words you learn if you saw them

cant read urdu but can understand when one speaks

i still think putting up the words in arabic text is a good idea. so that people arent just learning to speak and recognize words in conversation, but also when they see it written out.

what do you think mr. and miss moderators?

I think it is good; it'll help people learn the characters as well.

Arabic is difficult because each of the 28 letters looks different depending on its location in the word beginning, middle or end. and each letter has 3 accents plus the silence character so it can be very difficult for a newbie.

I'd suggest that learning to speak it would be easier than speaking and writing for a newbie but if you are writing it phonetically as well as in Arabic, its a good idea.

yes shockingly your parents didn't lie.

Yes, I agree to what Maad said, they do differ in pronounciation and used of words that have same meanings. Shame that most people here in Dubai haven't learn even simple Arabic phrases. Learning another language other than your own is like having another soul.

Where can I learn Arabic Online..?

thanks to Maaad and all for the little bit of words, i hope i am getting the pronounciation better... Does anyone know where to get a volunter arabic teacher, just to learn casual arabic speaking ..
