Dubai: Commuters were seen searching for their car number plates on Wednesday at the water-logged entrance to Ibn Batuta Mall and the Discovery Gardens.

“Thank God I found it,” said Abdul Aziz, who lives in the Gardens, wiping his Dubai number plate which was dented and out of shape. “It was horrible last night,” he said.

On the pavement were other number plates, some of them broken. The plates had apparently come lose and fell off while motorists floated through the waters.

The entrance to Ibn Batuta from the flyover was blocked with submerged cars on Tuesday night. One woman was seen sitting in her car with the waters gently lapping around her, trying desperately to get help on her mobile.

Three pumps were seen working at this ‘lake’ on Wednesday morning. “We are not sure when we can clear this road,” said one staffer from a construction company.

Meanwhile, there is only one way in and out of the Gardens, Jebel Ali Village, Gardens Apartments and motorists will have to be patient as it is bumper to bumper getting in or out from the Sixth Interchange flyover.

Losing car plate? Dented car plate ???

Gosh.. all these hi-tech mega projects and they forgot to install a working drainage......

It's all these wonderful Consultants that recommend the "Value Engineering" package that includes deleting the Storm Drainage because it "never rains in Dubai"

Well just shows you doesn't it! They spend millions on construction and forget small things like roa camber and drainage, this happens EVERY year people, you'd think they'd consider it now.

Also shows how crap some of the construction is, the brand new Emirates staff building - not occupied yet - completely flooded, destroying all the carpets and furniture, but hey that's what you get for employing unskilled labour and takign short cuts.

It is not a question of forgetting, as I stated before, "value engineering", heres another example back in the early 90's the design was completed for the new SZR, it included Clover Leaf Interchanges on all main road junctions, yes you guessed it, deleted under "value engineering"

Main culprits are the contractors, who one way or another gets his on way on what and what is not necessary in these projects, couple with in experienced workers who are there not to complete a successful project but to provide a mere replica of whats on the project plan.

The main reason for the flooding was due to inadequte drainage.

After reading this statement I think your knowledge of the construction industry could be written on the back of a postage stamp.

Sorry I cannot agree with this statement, their are many people / companies involved prior to the Contractor.

Sorry I cannot agree with this statement, their are many people / companies involved prior to the Contractor.

But then again aren't the contractors the main players on the ground?

I've been working in the construction industry for the best part of 20 years. All of them working on construction sites.

I'm afraid your comments regarding contractors are way off the mark.

Are your so called 20 years in Dubai or Italy...if its the former then its spot on.....construction industry in both countries is incomparable.

If its the latter then you are way off the mark and maybe you can use that stamp for yourself.

I have to admit, not much of my 20 years experience has been in Dubai, but since I have been here it is not too much different from the rest of the world.

The back of my stamp is full, so where did you get your vast knowledge of the local construction industry from? Not looking out of a car window I hope!!
